"The scene sucks. The end.

No, just kidding.

But seriously, am I the only one who realizes how enormous and repulsive of a trend this whole scene thing has become? Scene is the new goth, except it's sucked even more brainless teenagers in with it this time than the goth trend did. Bands like Fall Out Boy, Taking Back Sunday and Panic! At the Disco are the new Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC and Britney Spears. Bands like As I Lay Dying, Atreyu and Norma Jean are the new Linkin Park, KoЯn and Limp Bizkit. pop punk is the new pop. metalcore/hardcore is the new nu-metal. And, like any other musical fad, as the fanbase grows and grows, the actual meaning and message of the music lessens and lessens. Back in 2000 when thousands and thousands of teenage girls flocked to Backstreet Boys and Nsync concerts, they didn't go because they actually appreciated the music, they went to screech about how hot or cool they thought the members of the band were, or maybe even to meet some cute boys while they were there. Back in 2002 when thousands and thousands of teenage guys flocked to Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit concerts, they didn't go because they actually appreciated the music, they went to jump around, act tough, show off their testosterone, and maybe even meet some skanky goth girls while they were there.
And it's essentially the same thing now, except with different bands. It's like evolution, except backwards. "DE-evolution."

For a visualization of this slow but steady decline over the years from an already-bad sub-genre of adolescent clones (goths) into an even worse sub-genre of teenage clones (scenesters), I've created the following image:

Anyone else see a pattern here?

God only knows what the next Marilyn Manson or Jeffree Star in 2010 is going to look like...it's hard to picture anything WORSE. But of course every time you think that things have hit rock bottom, that things couldn't possibly get any worse than they already are, they of course do, in some horrible twist you never would have thought of beforehand. I bet 3 years ago NOBODY would have believed you if you had told them that three years from now the vast majority of the teenage population would listen to and adore the whines and screams of skinny black-haired guys dressed like drag queens. So who knows where this mind-numbing trend is going to go next, but I can't see it getting any better from here on out."

yep i agree. the 'scene' trend has influenced bands as well, effecting the way they look and their songs. Alot of the bands now sing songs they think would appeal to 'scenesters', their songs have no meaning whatsoever anymore. I used to love Paramore, until they turned all 'scene' on me. They were awesome until RIOT! came out. same goes to my chemical romance, after welcome to the black parade, i have stopped listening to them

so basicly, scenesters are people who look at the performance more then they acttualy listen to the music? omg that's retarded O.o i only listen to music that's good. i'd rather have an ugly ass band with awesome music, then an extreme good looking band with crappy music. bands like Alter Bridge,Dream Theater, Kamelot, Default and Nickleback are bands that concentrate souly on music. and even though some people in the bands I just mentioned look good, (lead singer kamelot and nickleback, guitar player, dream theater and alter bridge) there are also some ugly people in the bands ( Lead singer, Dream theater, keyboard player, kamelot and dream theater). i love these bands most, cuz they put passion and commitment into their music and that makes it great to listen to.

sceneters are people that are into the 'scene' trend where they care about their looks... alot. And because the 'scene' trend is so in at the moment, most bands dress/perform music they think will appeal to these scenesters.

"And what exactly IS "the image?" Well, for those of you who have been living under a rock for the past two years (or for those who simply have never browsed MySpace and haven't been to any concerts, malls or any kind of social teen gathering since 2004) the "scene" image is essentially the same as the goth image was, except more slutty and trashy, with tighter clothes, more outrageous usage of make-up, more ridiculous hair styles, less chains and much more of a transvestite feel to the whole thing.

The traditional "scene hair" is basically an enormous black backwards mullet. Curls are a big no-no. "Scene hair" is always perfectly straight, while remaining poofy on top, and is normally accompanied by some sort of small colored bow.
Besides the larger more excessive hair, one of the big differences between the teen-goth trend and the teen-scene trend is, for males, the more feminine, skinny and resembling of a homosexual coked-out drag queen from the eighties you look, the cooler you are and the more attention you get. This makes it incredibly difficult to distinguish between genders amongst scene kids, especially when they are in large groups; 'is that a scene boy trying to look like a scene girl, or is it just a scene girl?'

Below are six images displaying sexual androgyny amongst scenesters. Try to guess which gender each one is while looking at them. Hint: if you guess anything other than "boy" for any of them, you are wrong.

They all look so trashy.
._.

They ruin their hair and faces with straightening it and styling it.
Massive amounts of makeup = no

So my high school is infested with "scenesters".
lol
I like the scene girl hairstyle, I'd like to have it but it would not look good with my curly hair.
eh
The pics made me LOL.
Well I guess it's a personal choice and like every other style, this will
fade.

All of them are boys?! Most of them look more feminine than I do!

Forgive me for 'living under a rock', so to speak; but I really haven't known what a sceneter is until I read this thread. I'm pretty certain I've seen this particular look in youths though. It was different from the traditional goth image that I'm familiar with (much more provocative, feminine, etc) but I just thought they were trying to add some spice to their outfits, ha ha~

Well, I have to say I'm on the fence about these sceneters. Generally speaking, its just another way of expression. Sure it may very well be a fad that mindless teens are subjecting themselves to; but we've all been at that age (or will be), and I think a good majority of us fall victim to that kind of thing at one point or another. Its all about experimentation at this stage, and I don't see how that is necessarily a bad thing.

You see many examples of this throughout the years in the 70s and 80s. The 'punk', the 'rocker'...
Different styles surface and they are constantly changing. Its not really an issue about whether its down-grading because the reality is that's how it will always be.

I personally find this kind of interesting actually! Its a testament to how our perspectives of aesthetics change over time. Music can almost be considered a culture in itself. Its so much more than just about the music

Although truth be told, I could never bring myself to wear that kind of clothing in public

(Real) Goths at least were big on overall aesthetics. Newer Goths who "follow" Manson are all dumbass MallGoths and lack understanding of what Goth was all about. Siouxie > Manson. Scenesters all look like they want to be in the '80s again, only lamer. And, most I've seen were either way too young to even remember anything from the '80s or weren't even born yet.

I wanted to kill the guy who recently cut my hair, by the way. he gave me a borderline scenester mullet, and blew it out that way. I try to keep my hair relatively flat or blend in the layering more, so I don't have a retarded do, but I occasionally want to kill myself when I just get out of bed and see my hair in the morning (naturally poofs up like that from bed head). I'm trying to grow out at least three more inches so that I can get it fixed.
