To be honest the perfect example of this would be Tenjo Tenge where Masataka Takayanagi is the supporting character but you just really want him to be in the lead role insted of Souichiro Nagi. Also, Masataka is stronger than Souichiro right to the point where he beats him so bad that Souichiro is K.O.

Because if the main character knows-it-all.. Then there's no point of the story contuining on ..
So if he's weak .. There's gotta be other characters to help him..
This is just my opinion.

how is vash not the main character? and to add a note, if the hero was the strongest, then well....that wouldnt be fun now would it? we want to see him go through struggle and become badass, not have it already. They have a unique power like how ichigo and naruto from bleach and Naruto, but they arent the strongest, they have a "powerful" power at their hand though

i wonder why so many side characters, who are usually quiet and peace-loving most of the time, are like super strong.........for example: Kyouraku Shunsui, Ukitake, Jiraiya, Kakashi, Vash the Stampede, and etc.

if you know why, tell me the reason, the name of the characters, and of course the name of the anime.

The reason lies in a culture of Japan and many other countries of that region. The Eastern culture is based on thought that one man is not significant-what is significant is society. They education system based on a collective responsibility and collective work. The patriotic movement there is also provides japaneese people with the idea of significance of many people and insignificanse of just one person. This is the main reason that japaneese really hate americans and don't make the main heroes almighty(usually). I hope that I answered your question.

Uhm Vash the Stampede is not in any way a side character. He's the main character in Trigun.

That is so true. You explained it well. And also Americans portray the lead as the strongest, and almost inhuman. While Japanese portray the lead as somewhat imperfect and is still in need of peers. I think the difference is between the egos of both cultures. Ne?haha

Usually, strong good-guys are peace loving because they have seen what damage great power can do. They fall into the archetype of the wise mentor. In a sense, they have outgrown the passions of youth and become wary/cynical about their strength.

Another reason could be that the writers want to send the message that peacefulness is strength. You don't have to have Zaraki's bloodthirst to be strong. These other characters provide alternative role models.

Another is that being quiet is mysterious. It's just plain cool to have a quiet character whose strength is hidden along with their personality/affiliation/etc....

i think it's not a good idea to brag how strong they are... it's like a spoiler if they do.... like in magica rental, it~chan... every time he uses his glam sight, the battle is over...
