I actually started watching anime when I was a little kid. Somewhere around 5 or 6. Of course I didn't know that it was anime at the time. I realized what anime was when I was about 12 and watched as much as possible. Then I discovered fansubs and Jdramas... and my whole view of anime changed completely. I was intrigued by the culture, the language, and the way of life. After high school I tried to join local anime clubs but it turns out I don't really like to listen to people dictate about anime and I'm not much into clubs that just sit and watch anime then leave without saying a word to eachother. So in December of '06 I decided to start my own club. I like doing Japanese related activities along with watching anime (origami, bento meal preparation, learning about the culture, etc.) so one day I just mentioned that we should all start learning Japanese as well. Everyone was so excited about it that I ended up buying the Genki books in order for the club to start learning together. As it turns out it is great to learn along with others since you get to learn from eachother. I am also looking forward to next semester... my university is going to add Japanese to the list of language courses so whatever I learn from there I can pass along to the club. So that's pretty much how the whole learning Japanese thing started out.

Phew... that was a long post! LOL

uhmmm....^_^
well it started long ago when i was still a kid ...before i always watch Lupin, Voltes V, and Dragon Ball Z.... why do i watch them?? got influenced by my dad who is an otaku!!....After a couple of years I was very tempted to watch Cardcaptor Sakura ... which was a very cute anime (liked it a lot)...demo, i wasn't able to watch it all the time because i have to go to school TT_TT ... I asked my dad "why do i have to go to school all the time??" my dad was like ....and then i told him "I don't want to go to school anymore, I want to go watch Cardcaptor Sakura everyday!!!" .... my dad said "Why do you want to watch Cardcaptor Samura...or is it Satura everyday? huh?" .... i said "dad, it's Cardcaptor Sakura and i want to watch it because it's a cute tv show!"... my dad didn't answer when i said that... Then he searched on the internet then after a while he told me "hey come over here!".... and then I said "what is it now?"....Then when i looked at the monitor i said "hey dad! isn't that cardcaptor sakura?"....my dad said "yes it is and you can watch it online from now on...">>>> after i finished cardcaptor sakura (just finished it 2 years before now !!)>>>> then when i finished cardcaptor sakura i think i wanted to learn how to speak and write japanese.... but then again i wasn't able to learn it all the time because of school...T_T.... naze, naze, naze???!!! well mine is rather different...I think(haven't read all the post) well like most people, probably that live in the Philippines start watching American cartoons, from channels like Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon and Disney like me, and when Animax I had not a single interest in that channel so I never went there that was when I was about 8, and one day I was flipping through channels and saw a message that they would start showing episodes in English so I decided to watch there, and when it finally came on day I started watching there on a daily basis. I for some reason really liked the songs so I started memorizing them but slightly unaware eventually I realized I really loved singing Japanese songs. One day when Hero came out I was excited to have another anime channel, but the Filipino voices weren't so good (no offense to the Filipinos here that like the Filipino dubbed ver.) I saw that there were interesting shows there that weren't in Animax, but I didn't mind at first, than one day during Computer class at school one of my classmates opened a site that I saw was called Crunchyroll, at first I didn't really think it was anything, but one of my anime loving classmates told me about it and I got curious. At first I was nervous about joining but in the end I joined and started watching. after that I realized that I was learning some word that they said and that's when I started wanting to learn Japanese. even now I'm still trying to learn not only speaking but also writing and under standing. I've even met someone in my class that knows Japanese and I kinda have a crush on her anyway that's it.

my story isn't that unique. Watched anime (almost like crazy, u wont believe how many shows i "own") and payed attention to the words they say. What I like is that I can hear what they say much more clearly than in english, or maybe thats because I'm Chinese. Either way, I was drawn more to the jokes they had in anime and I thought wow, they're really good. But I as I payed attention to what lines they say, I noticed that they sometimes say a few words and when the subs came theres a few words. So I learn from there. But sometimes I learn just by instincts, i dont know if its because im asian. The way and expression and the grammer the japanese I hear from japanese characters (both anime and drama) is somewhat similar to how the chinese speak (at least thats how I feel). . So yea, i just paid attention to what they say, but I think i'm restricted to the number of words that make up "what do you mean?" because im just not used to saying so many characters at once from another language.

sry for spam* the other thing was, I got hooked into japanese music (j-pop/rock etc) when I got hooked into anime. It surprises me. For example, i watched naruto two years ago. And I couldn't make out much of the words from the third opening of naruto. But now that I've improved, and acquired a little more characters, I'm able to pick up more words, and because the more i listen the more I can familiarize myself with the words that rush to me when I watch anime. Now i can make up prob around 90% of the words sang in that third opening. Of course, I can't understand what the lines mean, but I can make out wat characters they're saying. In other words yes, I can hear them sing in japanese, but i can't translate it. Its a lil pathetic for me. Depending on the song, there will be those "generic" phrases and words they use in the anime show like "makenai" "moe" (just kd)....and all that. So you cud say between 10%-30% of what the song meant.

i think my story is alittle bit different but it begins in the same way i guess i did watch pokemon, DBZ and cardcaptors but i didnt know that they were animes it wasnt until i started high school that i started renting out anime from the video store like tengo tenge, elfen lied, FMA, saiyuki, naruto, bleach, deathnote and many more. then i watched this animated movie from Hayao Miyazaki called 'Spirited away' it was great i loved it but i still wasnt into learning a whole language yet then i heard that Hayao Miyazaki was going to release his new movie (well at that time it was a new movie) called 'Howls moving castle.' when i watched this movie i knew wat i wanted to do when i grew up i wanted to be a famous japanese animator it was my dream to become an artist but i did know wat kind until that day. so for five years i have been practicing how to draw animes and mangas as well as learning japanese to become a famous japanese animator like Hayao Miyazaki. however i am not good at learning i have gotten really good at drawing however i gave to much focus on learning to draw that i forgot to learn japanese, so if anyone can help me learn japanese i will appreciate it very much i only know the basics on everything like speaking reading and writing

I dont know where it started really, to tell you the truth, I always liked China/Japan, its been an interest to me since I was born, always liked them. I used to pretend I could write and read/understand the Japanese language back in 7th grade and lied to my peers, but I decided, eh what the hell, Ill just learn it already. So, I looked up 'learn Japanese free' on google, found a couple places, and started to learn hiragana, it took me a while to get those memorized... Um... I have also always liked anime...but never watched the raw...so thats not where it started...I dont know lol.
