Here's a sample of what next month's articles Might look like, given me and Ray work on some kind of template to make it easier to compile the articles. I used my review as a sample for this:

Feature page
~ Main articles, like the ones that Ray puts on the covers of the Onigiri, can be entitled to a title page, usually found on the "right side" of the magazine, if you imagine it in your hands.

Main article page
~ Feature articles get nice layouts, while other articles (since they're shorter) can get a tabloid format (around 4 columns per page). This plate is actually 2 pages fused, with a white space (spine) in the middle. I rushed this, but I would have preferred 3 columns on the right-hand page.

Review page
~ I think review articles should follow a similar format, like the one used in this page, so that things are more balanced. You don't have to follow the system I made up in my article in this issue, but we can discuss a rating system, so that it can be done in percent, instead of a very lofty 5/5 or 10/10 scale

These are my suggestions and proposals. Tell me what you guys think.

^ Oh wow that's really good. It's so good that it completely distracted me from telling you get to bed again.

I think I do need to get to bed...

I've got no problems with having a rating system, but I'm iffy on it being based on percents. What is the deciding factor between giving an album a 73% instead of a 74%? Perhaps it would work if there were different categories (music, vocals, lyrics, etc) where there could be 10 possible points or so for each one, then all of those individual scores could be totaled to get the overall score. Something like that just seems easier in my mind, rather than just randomly giving it a 68% or something.

D: I really hope that made sense. I didn't get much sleep last night, so I'm not very good at explaining myself at the moment.

^ Actually, that's what I did, but I didn't disclose it in my review. I'd rather we discuss what things should be included in deciding reviews, instead of brining to the table something that might be revised again. Basically, I was rather confident in the percentage system. :)

EDIT to below: I'm all for it.

D:< rawr. I went and got all confused for nothing.

I'm fine using the percentage system, just as long as there are categories or something else that will help to come up with a total. Otherwise it'd just seem as though we all picked a random number. Ooh, perhaps the discussion for this could lead to Gabbly's revival. ^__^

:: begins to sweat ::

ur stuff looks great Ed, as usual.

so we'll be doing the layout along w/ Steffi?

^^ Percentage points = good
Categories = good

However: it would need to be sorted out so that the categories add up to 100 [or a factor thereof] (otherwise it would just take time and we'd get stupid decimals).
I suggest we have 5 or 10 categories with 10 or 20 points each [max] from which the total can be calculated.

Eg.

For Music

Vocals - 13/20
Instrumentals - 9/20
Musicality - 10/20
Dance-ability (for dance numbers) / Calming Factor (for mellow music) / etc. - 15/20
Memorability - 18/20

Total [add-em-up] - 65%

For Games

Ease of play - 17/20
Graphics - 13/20
Fun Factor - 15/20
etc. etc. (this really needs a gamer to decide)

For Anime / Drama / Manga

Storyline - 5/20
Characters - 20/20
Drawing / Camera-work - 10/20
Addictiveness - 20/20
etc.

vv Would you include ease of play (ie. how complicated the controls are) in gameplay? That's something which has destroyed some otherwise brilliant games.

It might be good to include an element of "storyline" in the lifespan assessment, as having a well thought out final aim is quite important in some games.

Those categories would work for the manga review as well.

^ yup yup. I think 5 categories is good. 10 sounds too much, and what I did was that I rounded off decimal points.

For games:
Graphics
Gameplay
Lifespan (re-playability)
Sound
Open to one more

@ Henz: yeah, ease of play is part of gameplay. It's been said many times in the past, that a great game is usually flawed by it's hellishly impossible to master controls, which completely undermines the gameplay or playability of the game. Gameplay includes not only controls, but interface and related aspects that make the game "playable".
