IMO, Being respected is something that is very important. We all want our coworkers, friends and family to look up to us and think of us as quality individuals. Gaining respect can be difficult, if people aren't used to giving it to you.
The best way to earn respect is by meaning what you say. Be honest at all times. People want to be around someone who is truthful. Don't make promises you cannot keep and don't give people false impressions. This is simply a disaster waiting to happen. If people know they can count on what you say, they will automatically respect you more.

what is your advice on respect?

Being honest at all times gets you nowhere. Learn to pick your lies.

I’ve really found that saying “Yes sir,” “No sir,” “Please,” and “Thank you,” is highly effective for this. It sounds cliché but it’s true. The whole handshake thing is blown way out of proportion. It’s somewhat important, but I have a limp handshake and I’m highly respected.

It also helps to have some age on you. You’re going to want to be a white male, and not quite old yet. You’ll need to be healthy. Fat people don’t get any respect. For women you can’t have huge jugs, but you want some jugs.

Dress appropriately. Don’t come in wearing a dew rag and pimp cloths, but don’t wear a suit to an interview at Mcdonalds either.

I cannot stress enough how important short hair is. I had hair down my back and never did anything wrong. I was a good student, good citizen, no criminal record, and mostly innocent. I was treated like dirt and frowned upon like a bum. Now, I’m not half the person I once was, and I have short hair and am respected. People are stupid, just remember that.

But, more than all of this, here is the key to being respected:

Shut the fu#$ up and think before you speak, stupid! *Points people to the lovely image on his profile.*

And never, never, just be yourself. Turn into a mindless drone. Suck up to people. All they really want to hear is how right they are.

Be honest, helpful and know when to make your stand. Don't be an ass, know when to stop playing dumb and try to avoid conflicts or confrontations at all costs.

Demand it.

Matter of fact. I wondered this years ago. Then I found the 48 Laws of Power. And this one sums it up.

Law 34

Be Royal in your Own Fashion: Act like a King to be treated like one

The way you carry yourself will often determine how you are treated; In the long run, appearing vulgar or common will make people disrespect you. For a king respects himself and inspires the same sentiment in others. By acting regally and confident of your powers, you make yourself seem destined to wear a crown.

Its the same thing, demand it. I'm not saying you have to be a asshole, but always be confident and anything your doing. When people see a feeble lamb, they will garner their insecurities and attack it as wolves. Once you let people get a notch over you, you'll be dealing with it until you crack. Have confidence in everything, your swagg, your walk, your speech. Look people in the eye with everything you say. Don't be afraid to speak up, the basics.

I took this advice entering a new school. Worked perfectly. Although I'll defend myself whether I'm right, wrong or indifferent... I'm working on that lol But you don't even have to front with it, just find your inner strength and wear it like a crown... You'll be treated like you're wearing one. With family and friends, its a tad different, always keep it together, if you don't have it together-- Don't be afraid to slip alittle bit and be honest. If their true friends they'll be there to support you.

If all else fails, follow other leads of advice....

There are different types of respect...
The first type is where your the strongest guy who always pick fights and always win
The second type is where your so kind to everybody that your so well known
The third type is being the coolest guy in the school
The last way (my personal favorite) is to be f-ing tall, so people have to look up to talk to you...the good old fashion way
