I don't make anyone respect me.

I live by my beliefs, and ideals, and if that so happens to mean I get respect, then I accept it, and return it if deserved. So far it seems to be working.

I dunno the notion of respect is so vague. So, Id rather not give advice of some sort, though of course people like henz and ed have respectable (har) answers.

Off the top of my head i come up with one difference at least.
1) There is having respect for someone, as in having admiration.
2) There is show respect, something like valuing another customs, point of view, etc

An example for the first would be that I have respect for fellow secular humanists by default because they are in the vast minority of people with a respectable (worthwhile, correct, etc) view on life.

An example of the second would be age in say, south korea. One is expected to show deference on many matters to someone simply because they are older than you.

Now, as far as earning respect. For the second case, its simply a matter of having it and showing it in return depending on who you are dealing with. Having consideration for the culture.

For the first, I think its relative. If you have you hair dyed funny colors and a bunch of piercings, similar people are going to have some default respect (admiration, courteous, etc) for you based on the fact that your similar to them. However, the likelihood is that a very conservative person will not. A personal example: I was talking with someone, and in the flow of conversation he got to know that I've been a certain town, and he stated he had more respect for me because of that. Thats kinda odd to me, but for him it mattered a bit I suppose.

Voice no opinion! I find that opinions are the number one way to lose respect. Even if you calmly, intellectually and with good arguments present them in a non-converting way, they're bound to affect your prestige.

Ironically, I myself only disrespect people without opinions.

And never, never, just be yourself. Turn into a mindless drone. Suck up to people. All they really want to hear is how right they are.

i hate when people are not themsleves...people don't like it when your trying to please that person but by being yourself so i don't think that would work

My way of gaining respect from others is to show them I can do what they need to be done...better! The more work I do for them, the more I do their work in such a way that they'll have to rely on me in order to get it out of the way. Long story short: Go with the monopolization route to gain respect.

Be self confident

Be reliable

Never give up
Never complain

But still, you need to listen others, specialy when they need advice. Make a good friends know how to react in different circumstances.

There are some people who always try all they can to help/please/suck up/etc towards other people to gain respect either by being themself or not. In my opinion, before you expect people to respect you for what you have done, it's always better to know your highs and lows, then respect yourself for who you are. ( yourself as able to learn and adapt to the enviroment ) Just my opinion >.<
