Posted 9/8/07
you're the guy to ask Jay..

any recommendations?
I'm looking for a laptop... prolly under $1200.
Good for gaming but mainly used as a media center.

I'll be checking this weekend at places, but any leads?

What about ibuypower.com?

It had decently good reviews and fairly on the cheaper side.

You have to decide what a good site is. I like Newegg because it's trusted, they have warranties, and a great selection.

That's a horrible set-up. It's only the bare-minimum to have at least 2GB of RAM, that one doesn't even have ONE GB. (1024MB of 1 GB.)

And 2.3GHZ is good for a machine that's a few years old.

Umm Jay thats a core2duo u cant compare GHZ across different ranges. That 2.3 (should be 2.4) C2D would whip the pants off a 3.6 (or any GHZ for that matter) pentium. It really is one of the best processors on the market atm and will do him well (even in a dell, ewww did i just say that).

+Whats with the ram you recommended for that guys laptop. it runs at the same speed at the same speed as the ram already there, i know patriot rams decent but i doubt the latency is improved enough to justify the price tag. It is also 677 ram which gets bottlenecked running along side a C2D processor at the 266mhz(x2) default fsb speed on them. Unless he over clocked the processor (not wise on a laptop) he wouldn't get the best outta that ram.

I know that sharing your specs will help in giving suggestions on how to build your PC ~ what needs to be upgraded, what can be prioritized, at the like.

However, please make sure you're not simply posting yours specs to show off. You can do so in this thread:

Post your computer configuration here!

(don't ask me why it's "computer configuration"... I didn't start that thread. )

Here's a question: Is there any big difference on deciding between getting an ATI Radeon or Nvida Graphics card? I've heard comments saying that Nvida is preferred for video games, while ATI Radeon is the preferred choice for Grahpics Designers. Is this true, or is this just a common misconception? I might think of upgrading in the future.

About graphic card.
For the moment, Nvidia is leading on the capacity with the GeForce 8800 is the beset graphic car far beyond ATI graphic car.
But this card is quite expensive like 350~500 USD (sept. 2007) as you can see you must be a graphist or a hardcore gamer, and a rich one.

About processor.
the best on sept 2007 are the intel dual core, far better than the AMD.

for the ram, 1 GB is okay, but for gaming like BF2 2GB, is recommanded for playing the latest fps.
