Taken from my profile

I am officially announcing that from this moment forth, I am going to stop watching anime online in order to support the anime industry, and its continued growth.
I have recently read reports that the value of the anime industry is falling, and this is mainly to do with illegal file sharing etc... I will finish the anime I have already started watching, but after that, I will be buying all my anime legally. I encourage the rest of you to do the same, and support the industry in the same way I am.

Hey, you don't have to agree or anything, its just after reading the latest edition of PiQ, I cant help but agree. And after the collapse of Geneon, I do worry...
The Japanese anime industry relies on the licensing of titles from American publishers, and it would be dramatic if the profit was not being made.

I understand that it takes ages for anime to be released in its English equivalent, and I do get frustrated with this process.

And I agree with the writer in the PiQ article, that maybe some kind of download system where you pay a small fee for episodes is maybe a good option.

Anyways, maybe a lot of people will disagree with me, its ok... but please understand my opinion.

Thanks very much.

Here's my question. The anime industry was doing fine before America ever licensed its first anime. If anything, licensing is only a supplement to the Japanese anime industry. Is fansubbing the only factor the article you allude to points out for why the anime industry is falling? Because I would say the declining economy is a bigger reason for it - buying anime/manga is a luxury, not a necessity. In today's global economy, I would say that it's a very logical cutback to make when trying to save money.

I'm not just talking about fansubbing, it includes torrents as well. Illegal file sharing happens in Japan as well, so there are losses there as well. People who watch fansubs will most likely not buy the official release, thus profit not being made.

Hmm.. I do agree on supporting the anime industry but some of us can't really afford it. Chuck the cost of the box sets aside, the shipping fee for us outside America cost like US$30? It's not like we never consider about buying it but forking out another 30 after the price of the box set is just ridiculous. I usually get my anime stuff, be it dvds or merchandise, from japan. But some of the sites just make it so difficult to get it shipped that soon you'll be thinking they don't really want you to buy it. And then of course you have some who don't bother abt the industry as long as they get to watch it for free..

If they ever come up with a way to legally download for a small fee I'd gladly do it, however at the moment 30$ for 4 episodes or so just isn't worth it.

I so agree with you. There is something like that in America but you can only buy if you live there. And I don't.

Your reasons is the exact same reason for me . Now if i was in to dubs (which i hate) , or bootleg copies then i would have no real issues at all . My problem is that i want the original versions with subs , and they are alot harder to find than dubbed . I even gave up netflix because over half their anime are dubs only . To be honest i don't even understand how they can make a dub only version . It takes minimal effort to make a dvd dual audio .

Strange. Almost all the people i have talked too who looks at fansubs are also buying the DVD´s when they come out. most of them would never have bought it f they couldn't see if they liked the show or not.

So that really depends on the person. Many never buy DVD only look at th fanubs, then ou have those who looks at the fansubs and buy the DVD and then you have those who never buy a DVD unless they see the showad like it first

I´m one of the last one, i would never buy all the series i have done if i couldn't see if i like it or not

So this is a double-edged sword. They both profit and loose over it.

Oh. Where I come from, we've got dual audios. But the video quality sucks and half the translations just aren't quite there. Which leaves us with 2 options: 1)Download/stream. 2)Get it shipped. Question is how many of us can afford it.

We have dual audio as well , and i have never noticed lower quality for them . The problem is have is that most of the anime's i find are dubs only . At walmart i'd say i find around 80% dubs . When i go to a best buy i can find a decent amount of anime with dual audio , but most of them are mainstream anime , and they are ridiculously priced . So i go online and look , and just like the other guy i find what i want , but then there is the $25-$30 shipping fees . That is a pretty low estimate i'm giving as well . I remember when i was looking to purchase zeta gundam they wanted $100 shipping for the box set . It would cost them maybe $20-30 at most to send that to me , yet they want a $100 . I might add that all 3 places i found with the box-set all were charing in the $100 range .
