Do you enjoy Theater? If so, what kind?
Posted 9/9/07
Personnally, I enjoy comedy and i dislike drama, tragedy, romance, and farce. One of these days, I'm going to look up some Greek and Roman comedy and see if I can't go watch one. I also like to watch both sets of Olympics and the Superbowl. Also, if you like sporting events and WWE wrestling, it counts as theater. What do you guys think?

Yes I do. Everything but musicals.
I used to go frequently to the Iberoamerican Theater Festival, the largest theater festival in the world. I'm on a hurry so *tosses link*

I mostly enjoy comic theatre, however it's very variable. I do enjoy the odd tragedy or historical dramatisation when done well. I have been known to go a Wagnerian Opera voluntarily as well.

I also enjoy taking part in theatrical productions. Two years ago I was the evil villain in a "pantomime", and enjoyed every minute of it. (despite having to wear make up and a jacket that was too small for me)

I really appreciate good acting. Some actors on television seriously can't act, others can, and they sometimes move on to theatre in order to experience "proper" acting, without cuts every 5 seconds and where you really need to know your lines and choreography.

Greek theatre - when done traditionally - is positively boring. Once you've got over the novelty of being in a theatre where the actors just stand there and don't move, you're going to be bored for the rest of the play (unless you are an avid English/drama/classics student).

I wouldn't go as far as to say "If it's live it's theatre" - WWE, even though being live, and staged, is a different form of entertainment. The same goes for Circuses and Standup Comedy.
Theatre (in my mind) is a plotted story, it can have as few as one character, however it has a known environment (which is not the stage itself) and a mix of dialogue and action.

Favourite Play (so far): Copenhagen - Michael Frayn

actually it is since all theater evolves from religious rituals and sporting events. in WWE, the actors are the "wrestlers" and theres an audience and aesthetic distance. there are also storylines(however stupid they are, and i dont like WWE). In sporting events, the players are performers and the audience is there. it has the two most basic elements of theater: performers and audience. not to mention again all theater decsends from sporting events and religious rituals.

I've seen a few plays and I mostly - apart from the ones I was made to watch by my school, I always fell asleep at those - enjoyed them. The genre is not all that important to me, I like drama, but I've seen quite the funny plays. I think most people would be surprised at how amusing the theater can be...What's really important to me is the created atmosphere, the acting ( I don't like that typical acting that you seem to be taught at drama school) and the intepretation of the director. A great stage setting and good music is a plus of course.

I've seen a good Shakespeare, Nabokov, Brecht etc. as well as very entertaining Lone Wolf and Cub plays. I hate overly experimental plays and musicals, though. They annoy the hell out of me.
