I was on the other side of the country. Didn't care much about it. Oregon's a pretty safe place. nothing here but nature.

well, i think this thread will be locked but here goes:

i was scheduled to meet with the air force recruiter on 9/11. i hadn't made up my mind yet to join or not yet, but i was heavily considering it (I had already taken the ASFAB by this point). obviously, my meeting was canceled and i got to see a different side of the military that day when i saw my recruiter in BDUs instead of his blues, his relaxed nature swapped for a more serious tone.

This terrorist attack pushed me over the edge and I enlisted the next day. I felt a call to service to defend what I believed in at the time in addition to my more mundane reasons for looking to join earlier. I went up to MEPS and had to go in through the back door since the main entrance was blocked off thanks to FPCON Delta. After a long chat with the job recruiter (I chose F-15 avionics), did my physical, and signed the dotted line that day, on september 12th, 2001.

I shipped out about 6 months later for basic training. During my four year enlistment, I did serve in the middle east and am technically considered a combat veteran though we avionics technicians don't really see "combat" (we have been killed in combat occasionally though, stray mortars and the like).

I think 9/11 should have been our generation's Pearl Harbor, a call to stand up and fight the forces of hatred, tyranny, and ignorance that legitimately threatens the world today. Instead, our politicians turned it into an excuse to make money. They played on our countries desire to take action and defend itself. They stripped away our civil liberties (through the patriot act) and engaged in war profiteering at the cost many lives, both american and non, as well making a volatile situation in the middle east even worse.

I think the current administration should be put on trial and hung as war criminals. That's coming from someone who has seen this mess from the inside and literally swore his life to defend this country. I'm disgusted beyond belief and ashamed of what America has become. I think things will only go downhill from here, and I'm currently making sure I can survive it's impending fall (at the very least an economic crash is coming very soon).

I think war was always inevitable with the middle east, but we have gone about it in the worst possible way. We've chosen greed, superstition, and willful ignorance. We lack the conviction of generations prior.

That being said, I don't think we should engage in overzealous nationalism or blind military hero worship. We're not fighting for anything to be particularly proud of right now. I support the troops because many of them entered with the noblest of intentions only to be robbed of their opportunity to fulfill them. But I sure as hell don't support their mission or their leaders.

That being said, I think it's time to put 9/11 in the past. If we're always looking to the past, its hard to move forward. I think we need to remember that the threat of terrorism is real and present, but also remember our failure in how we responded to it as well.

I honestly didn't really care that much about it when it happened, same is true now.

I'm going to guess you don't live in the United States... because I would assume most other countries don't mention it on it's anniversary.

I'm too lazy tonight, so here is a wikipedia link.

I was pissed off, still am, That was the day I decided for sure to join the Marines

Living in North Carolina, home to many important miltary bases, the situation was very real for us, we were a major potential target, I remember going past Camp Lejeune, watching armed humvees drive around, with marine sentries in full combat gear or the activity at Fort Bragg, home to Special forces command, as well as the 5th and 7th special forces groups and the unit commonly known as, "Delta Force"

For months, military aircraft of different varities, would often fly over our town, going from one base to another, everything form C-130 cargo planes to Cobra helicopter gunships, alot of people I knew were called up, either for stand by or deployment, (Camp Lejeune is home to the Marine expiditonary forces)

In 7th Grade, Ms Owen's class. I remember it because I didn't do a project that was due and she was so focused she forgot. We watched it on TV.

I remember everyone elses parents coming to get them. How gay.

if you're joking, its okay, but if you're not, then that was a completely ignorant statement

No, what you just posted was ignorant. Time Magazine reported that 35% of America think Bush is lying and the government had something to do with 9/11. Read the facts, stop believing the media, and form your own opinions.

did you read what the previous post stated, it says "a conspiracy planned by Bush and his minions" i didn't say bush was not lying, nor anything about the media, i was just saying the 9/11 was not "planned" by bush,
anyway, of course i know the media is not to be trusted completely, anyways,

also, you're funny,
