That's where things get complicated :/

On other note, I hate it when people mix nationality and ethnicity/race up.
American is not an ethnicity!

RACE is the physical characteristics that define you in the society (skin color, height, hair, eye shape bla bla bla).
ETHNICITY is the culture you belong to or practice (gender, language, practices bla bla bla).

Those are my definition for both. =___=

I like to say "skin tone" rather than race. We are all apart of the Human-race, afterall.

For me "race" and "ethnicity" give me no concern at all. I don't care about my race, or my ethnicity.
I'm from a certain race, "Hispanic" created by force, by the sick desires of bastard Spaniards.
My ethnicity is what people call "Chicano". But I don't pay attention to such trivial things, I have other
stuff to worry about, rather than race and ethnicity. I said I don't care about my race, but it doesn't mean that
I don't care for all the others just like me, its just that my race is not an important factor, is not what makes me.

I would like to see what diff people from diff countries think about these two. What do you think constitutes a Race or Ethnicity? You could perhaps think that people living in the same area, for instance, or state nation, or even a particular group of people with similar beliefs and culture?

What are your definitions "Race" and "Ethnicity"? How many races do you think there are in the world? Name some?

im gonna second this

Today most scholars have abandoned these views and see race as a social construct with no biological basis. Breakthroughs in genetics and the mapping of the human genome in the late twentieth century have helped dispel many of the earlier myths about race. At least 99.9% of any one person's DNA is exactly the same as any other person's, regardless of ethnicity Of the 0.1% variation, there is an 8% variation between ethnic groups within a race, such as between the French and the Dutch. On average, only 7% of all human genetic variation lies between major human races such as those of Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. 85% of all genetic variation lies within any local group. The proportion of genetic variation within continental groups (~93%) is therefore far greater than that between the various continental groups (~7%).[4] Or to put it another way, "any two individuals within a particular population are about as different genetically as any two people selected from any two populations in the world"[5]

Because of these facts, there is general agreement among biologists that human racial differences are too small to qualify races as separate sub-species.

race is how yourself and others are perceived based on your physical biological characteristics.
an ethnic group is based on cultural factors like language, food, location.

I'm not too sure about these labels since we as people are clueless about our true identity (since many don't want to be called just a human being) but so far,

Race: Classification of different species (human, animal etc.)
Ethnicity: Still indifferent about this term since many people have their own definition of what they think it means, but from what I've read, it particularly means your background, nationality characteristics etc.

From what I've learned in Sociology:

Race is what you look like.
Ethnicity is what you are.

My race- Black American
My ethnicity- African American

There was an earlier post detailing why modern biologists think the very concept of "race" is bogus. I read text books and encyclopedias published within my lifetime that seemed to think every country had it's own race (ie the Irish race, the French race, the English race etc.)

The ravings of a bunch of madmen, many (but not ALL) of them German, in the middle of the last century, and more importantly the horrifying actions taken as a result of those ravings forced our societies to look more closely about how we thought about such topics as race, eugenics, euthanasia etc..

I think for some people 'ethnicity' is a way for them to continue to perpetuate the invalidated concept of 'races' (note the plural) of humanity.

For others it's a social/cultural package closely linked to nationality.

Of course the idea that ethnicity equals nationhood is countered by the idea of civic nationality vs. ethnic nationality. Many modern nations espouse a 'civic nationality' that cares that you participate in the nation as a citizen rather than you conform to a strict package of behavioural, social, and visual traits.

For all it's flaws the United States could be held up as an example of such an ideal. Their civil war nearly a century and a half a go could be described as a fight between the "Civic Nationalism" of the north. and the 'Ethnic Nationalism' of the south. Said 'Ethnicity' to be found in the writings of the day that lauded the 'southern man' as a man apart from, and not understood by the North or that spoke of defending "our peculiar traditions" against dictatorial actions by the north.

er.... so...

to me. Both words are traps, There may exist worthwhile concepts that we describe with words like "race" and "ethnicity" but those words to me come with the baggage of outmoded and divisive concepts.

anyhow IMO, your mileage may vary.
