I am a little bit confused with the title and the opening post, but I'll try answering.
Lately there aren't many good films anymore in cinema's. That depends of the topic of course
This is not a recent thing. You say
lately but what exactly do you mean by that, what timeframe are you considering? 20 years, 5 years, this year?
Also, what criteria are you using to measure if a film is good or not?
This is bound to happen with any form of entertainment you encounter, why? because throughout life certain experiences have helped shape what you consider enjoyable, what you think is quality, etc. Your personality and knowledge also influence this. Every one of us consciously or unconsciously filters out a lot of things and focuses on a certain type of entertainment genre, style, characteristic, etc. For example, a good fim for many people is one where all you have to do is sit there and it will be given to you practically in a plate. The plot, the reasons for the plot, the conclusion, etc. Whereas other people, prefer films where is not so much what its being said but actually the important points are on what is not being said. Or also films where the viewer is expected to figure out the conclusion and the overall turn of events to appreciate the film.
This is probably why, your father might say the music you listen to is 'not real music', and 'good music is what I listened to back in my young days', then turns out your grandfather says the same about your father's musical taste....so who among the three of you is correct?
With any human creation, the more available it becomes to access it and create it, the more material is going to come out. This has a positive side, for example, there is more variety. However, the overall quality is bound to decrease because works that require less experience and knowledge are easier to finish or come out in more quantity than a work that requires a lot of knowledge, skill, and good tools.
Also, when a certain tool is highly valuable and rare, I think people have the tendency to use it more wisely and make a better product out of it. For example, computer effects. Nowadays while they still take a lot of work and are not cheap they are more easily available. Before, computer effects were a tool, a source of help to enhance the film, now is like sometimes it becomes the complete focus of the movie, even more strong than the plot. I'm pretty sure you know of many films (example, superhero movies) where the movie is all pretty computer scenes but a completely stupid and ridiculously weak plot. Spiderman films anyone? what a bunch of nothing those films were.
and yes, the soldier films made to 'inspire and pay tribute to the heroes' are getting old. Thanks Hollywood.
