I joined this group just to discuss the ending of this crazy show. Everybody's on automatic saying it was a "nice" ending...but it was really pretty confusing. Such as...

1) Who was the final village elder?
2) I guess the baby looked like Hirose...so who was he finally supposed to get married to?
3) If Hirose was happily married...why did they bring Kohinata back from the dead?

Other confusing points of the show...

- When discussing his memories of Kohinata with her, he said she had "mean" eyes...but wasn't he supposed to have fooled himself and not really have been able to see anything? What the heck was that all about? Could he see or not?

well according to what I have researched,
1. i do not know who is the village elder, but I think I do hear someone like Maki in the series, I just can't remember when.
2. well, the love continues for Hirose x Hayami.
3. you see, in the train part, there are actually 2 rails. one on the near part of Hirose and the other obviously on the rear part. now let's say the train ran off in the near part of the rail and the kid and Hayami are on the rear, then obviously, both of them are not hit by the train. Besides, there hasn't been any mention of her death, nor a squeaking sound at the supposed point of impact between the train and Hayami.

Oh, all this time, Hirose really can't see until the train part in the final episode. It's just that Hirose is so happy that he though he actually saw them. Sixth sense I guess. Don't you think it's a bit weird that it's only him who found it confusing? Even the doctor said there wasn't any progress. Even his friends know that he is still blind. It's just that his "sight" was blinded again because of the unacceptance of her mother's death. And that's also why he's gone psycho.

1) I think the village elder is Hotaru...she even stated it I think
2) Sure the baby looked alot like Takuma...but it's Hamaji's baby I'm pretty sure...on a separate note, yea it still continues for Takuma and Hayami
3) Hirose wasn't married and he dedicated the windmill to Hayami, which is probably why Otoha showed up(though I still don't get why she became younger) and gave Hayami back to Hirose

1) Who was the final village elder?
Hotaru of course..she said it heself "As thhe Village Elder.." LOL
2) I guess the baby looked like Hirose...so who was he finally supposed to get married to?
Nope the baby isn't his..I'm 100 percent sure that is is Hamaji's.
3) If Hirose was happily married...why did they bring Kohinata back from the dead?
Well he wasn't married. Umm. Well she comes back from the dead because of Otaha [Hinanta] she said that she talked to the spirit commitee and they agreed to bring Hayami Back. (Though I'm not quite sure why she came back as a child..maybe she gave up her youth so Hayami could come back? i don't know ..a guess here.) I really like the ending [; Hirose X Hayami XD The ending means that even thru all those though times and suffering their love withstood even death [;

So that means he can see in the final episode? How cool. That was the only part of the series that confused me. Why do you think he could finally really see in the last episode? >__< I know it was because he realized that hayami really wasnt his mom..but how does that connect into giving him eyesight..? lol

well.. look at it this way.
when Hirose was brought into that town, he was blind still thinking of his mom. when he met friends there and there, he forgot about his mom because he's so pre-occupied with hayami and the rest. come to think of it, never has been a mention of her mother before the last two episodes i think.
now, on ep 11, he shouted at hayami saying that she couldn't bring back her mother anymore. which causes him to be blind again.
and for the last episode, otoha embraces him and Hirose finally ACCEPTED EVERYTHING regarding his mother.
so to summarize it:
blind = Hirose could not accept the death of his mother. he is walking towards the path of the dead, which is useless, which blinds him
not blind = the other way around. ^^

and oh, there has been an enigma to whether
1. Hayami died and was resurrected
2. Hayami died and was a spirit when she reappeared
3. Hayami did not die and was at a distance from them for X years
4. Hayami did not die and was with them all along.

I was devastated when Hayami got rammed by the train. But I was totally relieved that she was back in the end as mentioned by Otoha that she got some approval from the Spirit Committee. Don't care how, don't care why, just glad that Hayami is alive!!!

i think it was decided just like his vision, for her to be alive, and that it was rightful... its just like the bible story they used for the basis of the story "the man walked on the shore with god, and he went through good times, then he went through horrible times, painful, and hurtful, and he noticed there was only one set of tracks. he asked God, "why weren't you walking besides me during the painful moment?" and he replied "those tracks are mine, i carried you through those moments on my back."" i really loved it lols, and i got to see otoha again so i'm happy XD

I don't think she's alive at all in the end. When Hirose had trouble accepting his mother's death - he conjured this entire fiction - he created Otoha, he could see, he became 'The Chosen One'. Now in the end, Otoha reappears and says that the Spirit Committee let her come back with Hayami. If Otoha never existed in the first place, doesn't that make you question if this new 'resurrected' Hayumi is even alive?
There is the argument that, yes, Otoha did exist and gave Hirose the ability to see - but that is contradicted when he goes blind again and we see the that were his notes, and the contradicting photos, as well as the quotes such as "I couldn't peep.". These are hard facts that Hirose fictionalized this world - the world where he could see - in order to cope. Once Hayumi dies - he once again can suddenly see and Otoha and Hayumi suddenly reappear without worry that the villagers might recognize them? I doubt this. It's hinting that Hirose has returned to his fictional world once again to cope, and this time it might be for good.
