Sorry was too focused on the "God" part...

Hmm... I thought America is the land of mad mad mad lawsuits... must be pretty normal for you guys, eh?

But it's a good thing though. Some places, people are to afraid to take a stand and end up getting trampled by others.

Apparently only Denizon and I read the article. You guys are real smart.

Honestly, READ before you actually jump to any unfounded conclusions. This is quite sad people. Especially for the older ones in here bashing this senator for being an idiot.

If you're not familiar with the issues behind the case you're just as guilty of being ignorant as anyone else. The inciting issue here was a judge presiding over a sexual assault case banning anyone giving testimony from using the words "assault, rape, victim, and assailant". In other words the judge is crippling the case from the get go which is not what they are supposed to do. Judges are there to ensure a fair and balanced trial, this appears to be a blatant attempt to tie the hands of the prosecuting party.

As for the senator himself making a political statement about frivolous law suits is fine, however there have been hundreds of law suits won with less solid ground to stand on than this particular case.

edit: Though considering how corrupt the government is in general giving an alleged rapist a clear cut advantage in trial is really a trivial matter.

edit: hopchow, I would be interested in reading about the lawsuits that have less credible ground then this one.

In February 1992, Stella Liebeck ordered a cup of coffee to go from McDonalds. Liebeck was sitting in the passenger seat of her nephew’s car, which was pulled over so she could add sugar to her coffee. While removing the cup’s lid, Liebeck spilled her hot coffee, burning her legs. It was determined that Liebeck suffered third degree burns on over six percent of her body. Originally, Liebeck sought $20,000 in damages. McDonalds refused to settle out of court. However, they should have. Liebeck was ultimately awarded $200,000 in compensatory damages, which was reduced to $160,000 because she was found to be twenty percent at fault. She was also awarded $2.7 million in punitive damages.

There are plenty more though. You can find a more in-depth account of the case if you search around for it.
