Ahh, they're introducing IB at our sixth form next year, which is when I will be in the sixth form.
I find it hard to believe that there could be anything harder than higher/further A-level maths.

Okey..
Im an IB student, but I havn't been there long enough to say anything for certan (if you know what I mean..). Here in Norway there are some really crappy teachers but it is possible to get good grades if you ignore the teacher ;P *thinking-of-one-specific-teacher*. here the difference between SL and HL is that there is less work in the SL.. ex; we got 3 weeks off in economics because we chose SL. in history we on HL are going to read a bit more than the others and SL gets off a couple of weeks after x-mas.. history is not actually as bad as it sound if you've got the right book.
you can get through IB with good grades if you do your homework and dont skipp class

If you guys think that IB (or AP) is hard...Wait until college...It can easily make IB and AP look like jokes if you want it to! Hell, I was a straight A-B student in high school (GPA of a 3.84 on 4.0 scale) and even took AP's and did well, and you know what? There are some college courses that eat me alive...*cough*Calculus*cough*...Thank God that I am a History major (Russian minor); it at least is something that I can easily understand and get good grades on without killing myself. That said, I still do have a pile of books that comes up to my mid thigh that I am having to read this semester because it is all testable material, in addition to having to write a decent amount (in college you will find that you will have fewer, longer papers and essays that consist for a substantially greater portion of your grade)...

Anyways, AP and/or IB are a good idea and can be helpful in gaining college credit (might also help in admissions) and prepping your a bit for your first year or two in college, but beyond that they are completely useless (good high school GPA, standardized test scores, community service, activities, references - entrance exams if applicable - these are usually more important for acceptance)...Hell if you are fine with taking the few extra courses in college and you are prepared to do your work then, you don't have to put yourself though it now...Still, your choice...

i took IB certificates -- Bio and Spanish
i couldn't do diploma; i didn't have enough time (...just my story)

like claire (animoo_x) said, henz and steffi are both good to go to for IB questions.. not just their IB experiences, they are good people ^^

i can only give you limited amount of info... but i do like the IB system. IB diploma may be hard, but I do think it's nice and helpful.. some say that they feel that they can handle university work better because of IB.

do check though, if you have certain universities you want to apply for... check out what IB credits they accept and don't accept. Some universities only take higher level IB course credits, and for some, standard level courses are sufficient... if you have some ideas of what you want to major in and want to take IB courses of that subject in high school... make sure you're taking the level course your university accepts... it'll save you from taking the same course again at the university.

on extended essays... some say they're painful, but i think it'll be alright if you are good with choosing a topic and if you don't panic over it...

~ hm.. all for now...

edit in response to sheighton's post: yeah.. college courses can make IB/AP look very easy.. but don't worry... just take it a step at a time... the important thing is getting to know what you want...

edit2: ok.. Higher Level vs. Standard Level
I'll just tell you what I know... take Biology for example, HL and SL's difference is that HL covers one more area of content in the same amount of time -- meaning it covers a few more 'chapters' (i think i remembered right, it was more than just one chapter.. someone correct me on this if it is wrong). That means, the pace for SL class is slower and it has less material to go over...

for language courses.. then obviously it's the level of difficulty that's different. I can't really speak for other courses though.. but i assume the differences for chem, physics and perhaps math are similar to bio. again, someone correct me if i'm wrong.

i took IB english, math, science, and history. my IB english class was really hard cause i didn't like reading things i had no interest in. they read the most boring book ever! great expectations...ugh. we had a big presentation project every week. but taking IB courses is really good. it actually prepares you for college better than regular classes. from my experiences, you learn more stuff in IB than from regular. in regular classes i can slack off and still get an A, but in IB you can't slack off. you get lots of homework and stuff but i think it'll pay off in the future. i highly encourage you to take it if you haven't. it's really good for you to have some IB classes down when you apply to college. a C in IB classes is actually a B in regular. if you do really good you could graduate high school with an IB diploma and i think can start your first college year as a sophomore instead of freshman.

Over here, theres pre ib grd 9-10 and then real ib 11-12 which literally kills you

If its anything like it over here, go for 9 and 10, drop out and take academic(normal)which will be alot easier for 11 and 12.
