Happiness is a brief fleeting moment where pain, loss, grief, and sadness is all forgotten and when the only feeling you have is love. Basically it's Saturday night at a bar.

I'll probably post some short comments on the responses again, but before that I want to say this. The main reason I created this thread, besides to see the various opinions, was to get feedback on the idea that happiness is not the greatest thing in human experience or "the goal of life" as the Dali Lama, and others have put it.

I should probably be more specific in my opening posts, but I try to keep it more open to invite more involvement. The question I am mainly interested in is if you guys believe happiness is the best thing, the goal of life as it were. Many great thinkers seem to think something along those lines, and do you agree? Then all the things that go with that. If happiness is not all that great, is there anything that is? And related questions, etc.

GenocideSmiles - happiness is a affective state (think emotion/feeling). So, what causes us to be happy? Certain things that go on in our brain. One of my points about happiness is all things in moderation. I believe Aristotle taught this, but I'm not sure about what role moderation played in his thoughts on happiness. I'm not sure how many have realized this. What would happen if you had an overload on the things that causes happiness? Probably would sit around feeling great, doing nothing worthwhile like a druggie. Is this really the best thing?

kyu - Yea, you basically agree with me responding to the first quote. Your comments on 2nd quote are out there, so no comment. On 3rd quote, again I note my distinction between just having a feeling of happiness vs. some kind of state. I think this is important, but not sure exactly how.

bulletproofassa..., rickkers, bellus-vae, PaperTiger - Personal ideas of happiness. Quite nice, but I'm interested in the philosophy behind it.

frostmore - You comment was lame because it hardly added anything to the discussion. There is a lot more of importance that can be said I believe.

xmoongirlx - Well I'd say nothing in reality is perfect, so your unrealistic expectations are likely why you feel something is missing.

reikiaddict - I've already been over that, either respond to that or post something worthwhile or kindly don't post in this thread.

I think happiness is loving your life and who you are. Being able to wake up in the morning and knowing you have something to accomplish, instead of having no goals, an empty life, and no motivation. You appreciate the little things and not take everything for granted. It's liking yourself and everyone else and you're accepted by your friends and family for who you are.

There is a problem with that MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. *edit for special effects, in your mind make the previous word a deep evil rumbly voice*. I never really feel happy. Or sad. Or anything. Except annoyed.

i think happiness is not the greatest goal to achieve.i think much more important is contentment.i mean, imagine yourself on your deathbed, thinking about the life you lived.if you are then not satisfied with it i think its much worse, than having a happy life.what i want to say is,that when this day comes,i want to be proud of my life, even if it haven't had that many happy moments(even if that day comes tomorrow).
