Some of you have seen me post about FF7 being overrated. I'm not hating on the game. I like FF7 a lot its just that I think that it isn't the best in the series. Story line was good, the weapons and specials were good, the characters rocked, and it had fun side quests. With that being said why is it the best? I'm just curious. In my opinion I thought FF8 is the best and a little underrated. One more thing, explain how FF7 is the best without referring to FF7 AC. Again, I just want to know why FF7 is so great because FF7 seems to be the majority favorite.

FF8? you choose FF8 to be the front runner?.

Listen, those who tend to dislike FF7 are those people who pretty much never gave it a chance because they were to busy being superior playing there PC games...not to say im not one of those jackasses, for example im a PC gamer and i dont consider halo to be anywhere near as good as the fanboy coated love fest its become. However! what made it make me stop and stare was just how well the story followed, i never considered the game to be dull ever, sure the resistance group has been done numerous times by the series but who cares, the characters actually were plausible....in a sense, i mean...it didn't follow the same chipped away scheme, it always used to be....these are the good guys....these are the bad guys....ROUND 1! FIGHT!.....it was more like....these can be interperted as the good guys, however, in order to get the good done, a lot of people are gonna die just because of the consequences of blowing up reactors...kinda self righteous people...however if the price is right!...etc..and the baddies that we all predicted would go on to feature as the boss in someway, met there maker sooner then i would of ever thought...paving their way for the true evil villian....who was badass so thats an extra...but not in a silly way like.....*chop off head* Evil guy: dont lose your head now!... but in a silent psycho way...they kept the story following by occassionally giving a heart flet scene like the build up and aftermarth of barrets companions.

now the system.
i always thought the FF7 system was the best really, thats right, even better then 10!...it was just so easy to use, unlike 8!...i mean i had hours of fun trying different materia set ups, leveling them up and then reaping what you sow...the motion animation was also brilliant, it was clunky or anything it was just smooth, i also loved the concept of, you yourself dont learn the abilites but the materia itself is learning...and how can you call the limit breaks good, i thought they were brilliant, i mean even the level one limits were a treat to behold, i loved braver and big shot, not to mention they just all got flasher as they went along with the greats like meteorain and ominslash.. they were a welcome addition and another way to implement this feeling of uniqueness...The weapons were freaking great to with the skins shinning in 3-D, they had great names before but a feeling of underwhelmingness, but now they were shinning, things like vincents gun or clouds swords, they were just really nice.

Graphics:
while they may be shunned today, back in the day they were a treat to behold, the monsters inparticularly, they just stepped it up a notch and stopped that whole family tree element, like before, you'd get a goblin, then you'd get a greater goblin, then a mage goblin and then greatest goblin, that wasn't the case here, sure you'd occassionally get it like the dragons but majority of the time the monsters were very unique with there style and abilites. They also got into the cutscene element, there is no way aeris death would of been as eye bludging as it was with being in 3D...it was stepping its game up...which also reminds me...it was pretty much one of the key times a video game really provoked such emotions and if a game can make you feel...its the best in my books...however, graphics alone shouldn't be able to make you feel sad then push you further in the gutter...they have to be accompanied by....

Sound:
Now i think this one is pretty self explantory...FF7's music were just brilliant..it was purely instrumental with the exception of SEPHIROTH!..but it really was fantastic, personal favorite was aeris theme which made it all the more sad when she crossed the plane. i dont think i need to convience you on this part.

length: for squares first real 3D game..they need make the length a limitation....40 hours of gamplay spanning across 3 discs...with tons of side quests, i mean...when was the last time you played a game where 2 of the characters were optional however! how one of them could potentially be integral to the plot! (vincent)...i mean i havent played a game since where they make a character, give him a ton of back story, ambitions and stuff...yet, he remains optional..just crazy...sure FF8 was 60 hours but whatever...ff7 had better side quests :).....

That is why FF7 is so great!...

Final Fantasy simply had the most memorable characters with actual struggles. I agree that Final Fantasy VIII is very underrated, but I think that the characters in VIII didn't have as much of a drive behind them for a few reasons.

1. The characters are much too young to be considered wisened or experienced people. They're fresh out of high school or in this case, fresh out of the academy where the characters in VII are at least in their 20s (save for Yuffie and technically Red XIII) with genuine moral dilemmas and back stories of their own.

2. The orphanage story, time compression, and Ultimecia seemed hastily thrown together (especially since Ultimecia appeared so late in the game and was the ultimate antagonist who's only goal is ruling the world whereas Sephiroth is a constant menace throughout VII and seems like a genuine psycho with many beefs with the world.

3. Final Fantasy VII continued to have people guessing about what was going to happen next where VIII had a somewhat predictable storyline.

4. Final Fantasy VII had a lot of open gaps in the storyline that were answered in a way where we wanted to know more. But Final Fantasy VIII was just cut and dry and ended conclusively with no chance of their being any outside story.

Don't get me wrong...I love Final Fantasy VIII, but compared to Final Fantasy VII, it just isn't as great.

I think, in my opinion, why FF VII is the best is because of the development of the characters and the way their lives intertwine with one another. Now in truth I personally rather prefer VIII over VII due to many reasons, but FF VII was pretty much what skyrocketed Final Fantasy to what it is today. As far as I have seen, there really hasn't been another FF series that has really had an effect like FF VII, though I could be wrong.

story:
ff7 for me is the best ff because the story is so interesting, the heck if the graphic sucks, whats important is the
content and ff7 really delivers ^^, ff7 AC is only a support for the great story. also each characters past are interesting..... makes you want to go "how did that happen?? i want to know!!!!!"
characters:
the designs are perfect for the personalities of each characters. by just looking at the character you can really guess what is their personality. this also works for ff8 but come on!! who wants to play as a long tailed midget character with weird looking companions?? you may think that im biased but im a gamer that really tries to connect with the characters im playing, how will i do that if their physical appearance is, you could say, far from reality??
>> even with the continuous improvement of gaming especially on the graphics section..............everything is useless if the story is boring
>>even though i play PC games and the likes i still play ff7 on my ps1 and i cant get enough of it.......long live ff7!!!! yey!!!

I think the long-tailed midget character you're talking about is Zidane from FF9...FF8 was full of postpubescent teens fresh from military academy out to save the world with their 18 years of life experience and abnormally extensive military training (much similar in the fashion of the training done by communist Japan preWWII).
