Well I have always been reluctant to call anything a masterpiece, just like I'm reluctant to give anything a 10 out of 10. Nothing is perfect. I suppose the closest ones would be (in no particular order)

Berserk
Monster
Steins;Gate
Noein
Darker than Black
Baccano!
Fullmetal Alchemist
Mononoke (note this is not Mononoke-Hime)
Death Note
Neon Genesis Evangelion

Well that ended up being a little longer than I expected.

As for Chrome and Stark bitching about digging up old threads, you two are regular posters. Aren't you tired of looking at the exact same threads all the time?

I agree with every one of your picks for your favorites but a 10 doesn't have to be perfect does it?

I've given out 10s simply if I deem them in a class of their own, a masterpiece if you will. Not necessarily perfect, because as you said, nothing is perfect. So a 10-scale or any scale for that matter is relative to the rest of the field.

I deem a masterpiece to be at least one of two things, if not usually both:

1) A title that stands above the rest. It is superior to everything else out there in it's same genre or demographic.

2) A title that is so relatable to me as a person that it transcends being just an anime series/manga/movie.

You still mad about me calling you forgettable?

And there's already a Favorite Anime thread, which is similar to this one.

Now as recent results tell us, masterpieces aren't synonymous with people's favorites now are they?

Both threads have the same purpose.
An anime you call a masterpiece will automatically be your fave, isn't it?

That's how I see it.
All the anime I have listed in this thread are all favorites of mine.

That's the one that you have an issue with? Haha, it's my personal opinion -shrugs-
Maybe it is a little far-fetched to call it a masterpiece, but it's still a good show.

What Chrome said.

But being the pretentious bastard I am, not everyone's favorites are masterpieces i.e. Mirai Nikki.

Honestly, I don't have anything against Mirai Nikki but that clearly is an example of people being about as short-sighted as possible and I don't hold anything against people for voting what they enjoy either but it beat Paranoia Agent, Mushi-shi and Hell Girl. Good god almighty!

Actually I'd think favorite would be more subjective based on a persons tastes while masterpiece would be more objective. There are a lot of things I'd consider a masterpiece but would never call a favorite. Evangelion, for example.

That said two shows I didn't see mentioned, or missed anyway, and would consider to be masterpieces would be Natsume Yuujinchou and Kare Kano. They happen to be two of my favorite shows in there genres so go figure.

Well said. I'm going to add on this a bit. Masterpieces would most likely be on most people's favorite anime lists. In other words, most people would enjoy that anime and hence the reason, it's considered a masterpiece.

On the other hand, masterpieces could be something that's worth mentioning but not necessary a favorite.

Examples may include Steins; Gate, Full Metal Alchemist, etc where it's rated high among fan sites but not necessary a favorite for anyone.

I'm not an expert on this subject but I think that's the general view from what I can see.

Edit: Going to also add on that when the case a masterpiece anime can be considered masterpiece if it has some sort of uniqueness like kufirst said.

I swear if Mirai Nikki wins against Death Note...

But surely there are some who think of it as a masterpiece.
Now I'm not holding it against them, it is their opinion after all.

As much as I agree with you, I don't think people are as detailed and deep as you
when it comes to judging an anime as masterpiece.

And in most cases (I think), an anime judged as a masterpiece is automatically a favorite.

Just my opinion the #1 on that list is definitely legit. I judge most animes by storyline. It has to be good or at least understandable to be considered a masterpiece.

The animation, VA, background music, etc comes after that.

Personally, this is by and far the most important criteria for determining a masterpiece, when an anime engrosses you on an extremely personal level and therefore generally leads me to categorize it as one of my favorites. Which as you said, and I agree, that when someone typically calls something a masterpiece, it is also a favorite of theirs. Which was the point I was making with ChronicAddict in that people are bound to call something their favorite show and give it a 10, even if they know it's not perfect or the best.

Though, I also agree with Tanrim that people might be able to distinguish their own set of favorites from ones they might call a masterpiece; but most anime fans aren't that analytical.

Hmm, that's kinda interesting tbh. So, based on this, you're saying that an anime is considered a masterpiece if it relates to you in someway? (Ex. real life experience such as school, a past event, or similar character to someone you're friends with irl)
