'tis a good movie but after seeing just how much story was left out of the manga I'm surprised that no company has converted it into a short series.

really?

best movie. brings back memories.

i havent seen alot of anime movies but i this by far i think is the best!

Ok maybe saying no one was a bit of an exagerration, but on the "Best anime movie" thread Akira wasn't even mentioned. It was either a studio ghibli film or FMA conqueror of shambala.

.....FMA movie was not a good movie. *Coughed* ANYWAY! I really liked Akira. For having so much left out from the manga, you have to admit it's seriously impressive. I remember I watched it not really knowing what to expect...I was surprised...especially with Tetsuo at the end (You should know what I mean if you saw it, I don't want to post spoilers) I wasn't expecting that.

Wish I could've seen this movie in theatres...when my dad heard I liked it he felt the need to brag for the rest of the day, "Well I saw it in theatres! Lucky me, eh?"

I watched and enjoyed the movie, but I have to say I didn't think it was that great, it is fairly overrated, I've never read any of the manga, though.

Well it was made 18 years ago. Pretty easy to say its overrated now, I'd say. I suppose it was fantastic for its time, and still remains rather good. But, perhaps some people look back on it nostalgically and rate it too high for the present. To say if something is overrated and be accurate about that takes a very good knowledge and understanding of the anime scene, and I haven't really seen any really good reasons given for people opinions this way.

So, I'm asking you guys whats better over those 18 years then? Probably not all that much.

Anyway worth watching. It has some good themes. I can see how it influenced more recent animes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akira_%28film%29

"I personally thought Akira was retaerted." At least spell retarded right. T_T. And giving reasons would be good too...

Interesting. A thread about the movie, but hardly anyone actually talks it about it unless they are saying their views on how they think it's overrated or not.

Let's at least explain the plot for people who haven't watched it:
Basically, it's about this boy named "Akira" who had supreme telekinetic powers and was thus considered a god by many people. When he died, he was preserved as an underground military experiment, hoping that he can be revived in the future. There were a number of people in "Neo Tokyo" (Tokyo in the future) that had telekinetic powers that were also subjected to military experimentation. It was said that Akira was the cause of World War III. Since large headaches that sometimes include hallucination comes with their abilities, they are given very strong pills that are considered stronger than illegal drugs in the manga. ("This is candy compared to that stuff." --- Nurse in Kaneda's school in the manga.) That relieves their headaches for a while, but only the military has acess to them, thus making the "experiments" rely on them and stick with them for pain relief. Akira was the strongest of these experiments, however, a former biker punk called Kaneda suddenly showed powers comparable to Akira, and the people that belong to the underground experiments are trying to catch him, fearing another World War. While he tries to run away, he causes great chaos around him as the cause of his endless headaches.

For more information, go to the wikipedia link that Eros sent. Gotta love wikipedia. <3

I consider it a classic, therefore can't exactly be called overrated. It certainly is a breakthrough in anime, possibly the best one done at its time, and is still remembered today.
People consider Cinderella a Disney classic. Everyone loved it at its time, and people (specially kids) still love it. Why not call Cinderella overrated? You wouldn't even think twice, would you? Because you consider it a classic.

You mean Tetsuo. Also, it is not only believed, but is a fact that Akira was responsible for the start of World War III (as evidenced by the opening of the film, and confirmed in the manga).

And I agree that Akira is a great film, one which I think it has aged incredibly well--the technical precision applied to the creation of Akira equals, if not surpasses, that of most anime movies produced today, and was accomplished without the aid of computer compostion processes now common. Most people who dislike the film do so because they don't understand it--unlike much of what is created today, Akira requires several viewings to understand. This ain't no popcorn anime! Also, it is probably a little known fact in this circle that Akira is the only animated film to have been a part of the Criterion Collection (until Geneon/Pioneer bought the US distribution rights). I have the Criterion Laserdisc set to prove it!

Switching gears, I just want to say that I really LOVE Tetsuo's nightmare/hallucination sequence. And the motorcycle sequences are all incredibly cool; Who doesn't want Kaneda's bike?

whoops. thanks for that correction there. It has been a while since I watched the movie or read the manga.
I agree with the hallucination sequence.
I also love how everything is drawn; it's not the picture-perfect Tokyo that most animes try to show these days. I love how Neo Tokyo looks there--dirty, realistic, urban, and rather refreshing.

Yeah, the art and design is beautiful and original. They never use straight black in any of the backgrounds--everything is dark greens and purples. Also, the cels for the film were all drawn very large, and shot on 70mm film for high definition. So much detail in everything!

^ not to mention the precise voice overs. To this day, it remains to be the only anime that ever had its voicing recorded before the animation.
