Eh I have to use references. Only thing I can create on my own is landscapes and stories but not actual characters.

I used to when I was first learning. I would even pause the tv and trace it sometimes (anime pictures were hard to find when I first started drawing it). I'm a professional artist now, so I don't copy, but I will pose/have friends pose in photos for my drawings sometimes.

I'm only talking about anime pictures, nothing else.
:D

I need something to look at to draw a good picture.
Like for example..

I've learned from Marvel methods of drawing how people draw.. It's actually similar to how to draw anime..

You need to line-up the character's body position a.k.a. stick-figure pose, Knowing roughly the average length of:
Elbow to wrist
Shoulder to elbow
upper torso
lower torso
Waist
Thigh length
Shin
This is the step you need to work on

After that is the step of proportion, which most people lack when they draw at random..
For these you need shapes, normally ovals and egg shapes.. An average anime character's head shape is a circle with a downward cone.. The face and eyes are usually right after this step..

Afterwards, draw in details and lines of the human body or clothes..

Remember to draw lightly so that you can erase and fill in..

Here's a good tip:
Print the picture and trace shapes over them, and draw those shapes in the exact same proportion on a seperate piece of paper, after that, draw in the details.. That's to train you to get used to drawing the Comic Book Method..

typically, I just use memory so I don't just do a free hand copy....But a ref is best to know the way of the hair, eyes etc.....like one time I drew Lelouch without a ref....and his hair turned out weird.....But some characters you have to find a different style to draw them in other than the artists....like Tsuna, his hair for me is kinda...deflated....

I sometimes use references, such as the actual picture, sometimes pause the tv to draw a poise. But I don't normally trace. I continue fixing my pictures till I think it looks fine

i usually like to draw something on my own to make it creative, but if i want to draw some(one/thing) that i already know, i usually look at the image.
