An 11-year-old girl died after her parents prayed for healing rather than seek medical help for a treatable form of diabetes, police said Tuesday.

This is truly sad. Dying is a a natural part of life, dying because of negligent parents, despicable.

WESTON, Wis. — An 11-year-old girl died after her parents prayed for healing rather than seek medical help for a treatable form of diabetes, police said Tuesday.

Everest Metro Police Chief Dan Vergin said Madeline Neumann died Sunday.

"She got sicker and sicker until she was dead," he said.

Vergin said an autopsy determined the girl died from diabetic ketoacidosis, an ailment that left her with too little insulin in her body, and she had probably been ill for about 30 days, suffering symptoms like nausea, vomiting, excessive thirst, loss of appetite and weakness.

The girl's parents, Dale and Leilani Neumann, attributed the death to "apparently they didn't have enough faith," the police chief said.

They believed the key to healing "was it was better to keep praying. Call more people to help pray," he said.

The mother believes the girl could still be resurrected, the police chief said.

Telephone messages left at the Neumann home by The Associated Press were not immediately returned.

The family does not attend an organized church or participate in an organized religion, Vergin said. "They have a little Bible study of a few people."

The parents told investigators their daughter last saw a doctor when she was 3 to get some shots, Vergin said. The girl had attended public school during the first semester but didn't return for the second semester.

Officers went to the home after one of the girl's relatives in California called police to check on her, Vergin said. She was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The relative was fearful the girl was "extremely ill, dire," Vergin said.

The girl has three siblings, ranging in age from 13 to 16, the police chief said.

"They are still in the home," he said. "There is no reason to remove them. There is no abuse or signs of abuse that we can see."

The girl's death remains under investigation and the findings will be forwarded to the district attorney to review for possible charges, the chief said.

The family operates a coffee shop in Weston, which is a suburb of Wausau, Vergin said.[/color]

heh, I don't think it's stupid to pray for someone... at least their hearts were in the right place...

but if it was treatable, they should've also sought medical attention
little faith indeed ¯\(°3°)/¯

Her parents are complete idiots. This will teach us a lesson. Act before seeking god.

Some of my relatives are like the parents, because they're so religious, but my relatives also have common sense...I mean, my relatives know what a hospital is.

That is sad.

so what happens next? they're not gonna arrest them b/c they prayed? they let her die. it was treatable. this reminds me of that Dan Brown book, Angels and Demons, when the president of CERN was crippled b/c his parents wouldn't let him get a shot and instead prayed; a doctor slipped it to him, otherwise he would've died. poor girl.

I hate fucking stupid people like that. It was their own fault. They could have prevented their daughter's death but instead chose to do nothing. I can't believe that no action is being taken against them. They should be charged with involuntary manslaughter. If I was in social services I would yank those other children out of that home so fast it would spin right off it's foundation. (Yes yes I know the govt. can't touch them b/c of their right to practice their religion whatever fucking way they want). Considering their stupid statement that it's okay she died b/c she'll be resurrected (complete and utter BULLSHIT!) you know that if their other kids get sick they won't do anything different > they'll just let them die too.

For fuck's sake they're not even mourning her! "It's okay she died she'll be resurrected." Stupid assholes!!

May they burn in hell for putting their religious beliefs before their own daughter's life.

Ya know, I respect other ppl's beliefs, but NOT at the expense of someone's life > ESP the life of a child who was depending on them.

sooooo ... the parents are not being held accountable as the legal guardians and protectors of this child ?? medical care must be sought for injuries and ailments or else that is called negligence . i dont believe this .
this is just as STUPID as that case where some black old guy shot a white kid point blank in the face in front of his friends, and got 3 or 4 measly years . all because that white kid was saying racial slurs . HOMICIDE is HOMICIDE . OMG these double standards and cracks in the system are RIDICULOUS !!

I agree with you 100% People dont seem to realize that just praying to God and doing nothing on your part wont give you anything you are asking for. You have to work for yourself before someone else can give you a helping hand. Its a shame the little girl had to die like that

As much as I want to see the parent's in trouble, unless the prosecution can prove that the parents did not pray for their child, then they can't be charged for parental neglect. For they did "pray" for her to be cured to their "god."

Plus, if the parents have witnesses that say that they were truly praying, then they really can't be touched. If they are pressed with charges, there will be an outrage of religious fanatics... I don't know if the government is prepared for that.

Government shouldn't be able to touch them, for they are using their "religion" as a shield between them and the government.
