I think this is a great idea: castration.......a punishment to fit their crime. simply chop their balls off and send them back into society.
either that, or don't separate them from the rest of the prisoners in the prison. that way they'd be dead soon anyways (sex offenders are hated beyond all other criminals by other prisoners, to the point where they have to be kept in separate areas).

If we hold that justice is an eye for an eye, it is difficult to punish some sex offenders. If one gropes another, for example, it does not necessarily carry the same impact to grope him in return; similarly, one who rapes a child cannot have the same experience. How do we objectively determine a proper fine or jail sentence for these individuals? To expand even further upon this issue, consider someone who murders five people against someone who murders fifty. We cannot execute either of them more than once, so what do we do if we follow an eye for an eye? Furthermore, when we do use prison sentences, what is the purpose of a life sentence or anything of similar length if the laws actually exist for the sake of civilization rather than for retribution?

As far as I'm concerned, these are very weighty ethical issues that actually call into question our entire system of justice if not our society itself, at least in terms of being consistent with its other standards and their purposes. I have no answers, though I've wondered how well exile to an uninhabited area (a concept with many practical problems, I know) would work.

One aspect of sex offenses in particular that intrigues me is the dismissal of the free will aspect of the human being. Assuming we do indeed have free will (I don't necessarily believe this, and a determined world would look and feel precisely the same anyway), at what point can we expect people to simply get over unwanted sexual experiences? If not expect, should we at least hold that they are theoretically able to get over the case? I know many people suffer for years because of these crimes, but where do we draw the line between suffering caused by the criminal and suffering allowed by the victim? If we can't draw the line, how can we punish sex offenders fairly? Our answers to these questions carry over to the broader field of justice when we consider that even the act of theft can have significant emotional and mental impact on individuals, depending on who they are and what was taken to them. Should we judge according to the specific case, regardless of the intentions of the criminal (which are not knowable with certainty either)? Should we judge broadly? If we do the latter, should we aim for a middle ground or should we punish with extremity at all times, just in case the particular crime committed had a severe impact on the victim? Should all criminals actually be executed? (Cruel as that sounds, there are arguments for it.)

It seems to me that "we do our best" just isn't a good enough answer, especially since it is often difficult to know the best route without actually trying the alternatives. Nevertheless, I have no answers...

Just like my nan says "Snip snip". The additional hand-scissors whilst speaking these words are optional.

Great idea!!! and yeah any sex offenders are hated in prison... one time all teh cons found out this guy was one and they trapped in a "blind spot" and beated the shit outta him ...some guards walked by and just watched him as multiple people were smashing his face in and all as the guy cried for help...they didnt even break them up till they were "finished" I love working with cons/ex-cons they tell teh best stories

i think they should be held in prison longer and also they should have to go through classes and tests to prove that they are ready to be put back in society

"You see a little girl on the sidewalk with a lollipop. Do you,"
A. Molest her.
B. Rape her.
C. Walk away.

i guess it depends on who they raped or molested. if they molested a child they should be killed immediately.

i'm not one of the people that believe that they ever get "cured". with me it's kind of like "once a cheater always a cheater"

If they raped or molested someone else they should be in jail for a very long time.

I also think that if they do ever get out of jail there should be a better edition of the sex offenders registry so that they can't go where ever they please. They should not be allowed to go where ever they please.

I think it would be good if we just create a little island and put them all on it and they can just live there and do what they want

Could you please be more specific ?
I ask this because there have been many labeled as "sex offenders" who were quite honestly innocent of the charge (and some were incredibly young too).

Also, are we talking about convicted offenders or just those who've been labeled this without a trial or proof ?

I believe that they shouldn't be released from prison until they have been brutally raped at least twice.

Read the rules man... they're right there at the top of the board for you. If that's too difficult, here is what you should consider looking at:

3. Posts must offer significant content. If you have no opinion on something, DON'T post. "I don't know." or "Yeah I think so too." is not enough. The section is called "extended" for a reason. Longer posts, but more real discussion. This includes the first post by the thread creator. If you don't provide enough information/starting discussion for someone to reply, your thread will be closed.

Unfortunately, your opening statement leaves a lot to be desired. I'd love to give a response to this, but you need to define your terms. Get specific. Sex offenders? There are many different kinds of sex offenses, and they all vary in degree and severity. Here's a list of all the ways someone can qualify as a sex offender:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_crime#Sex_crimes

That being said, is there any way I can put forth one generalized "punishment" for all of them? I should say not. Situation, incentive, and other background information aside, these different offenses have completely different implications that deserve different punishment. I'd appreciate a more specific premise to this discussion. Maybe narrow it down to high degree sex offenders? (Though, no matter what you provide, I don't think there should be a fixed punishment, since all crimes have different situations to them, and should be considered differently during sentencing)

i agree sex offenders do differ in degree of crime, and the serious cases should be punished accordingly . but what i do not agree to is how young kids are having their lives destroyed because they are having sexual relations with each other, or simply groping or something minor .
say a boyfriend gets arrested for being with his CONSENTING underage girlfriend . that is what i dont understand . i know the law is placed to protect the young from adults who mean to molest them . but why is the law enforced so severely for consenting couples ? that boy will forever be in the 'sex offender database'
i find it unfair .
