What is Earth Hour?

Earth Hour was created by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Sydney, Australia in 2007, and in one year has grown from an event in one city to a global movement. In 2008, millions of people, businesses, governments and civic organizations in nearly 200 cities around the globe will turn out for Earth Hour. More than 100 cities across North America will participate, including the US flagships–Atlanta, Chicago, Phoenix and San Francisco and Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.

What do you do?

Nothing. All you have to do is join people throughout North America and around the world and just turn off the lights for an hour starting at 8 p.m. (your own local time)–whether at home or at work, with friends and family or solo, in a big city or a small town.

When is this again?

Earth Hour 2008 starts March 29 at 8pm (your local time) for one hour only.

How did this start?

It started with a question: How can we inspire people to take action on climate change?

The answer: Ask the people of Sydney to turn off their lights for one hour.

On 31 March 2007, 2.2 million people and 2100 Sydney businesses turned off their lights for one hour - Earth Hour. WWF measured how much energy was saved during Earth Hour in Sydney and achieved a reduction of 10.2% (more than double their target of 5%). If the greenhouse reduction achieved in the Sydney CBD during Earth Hour was sustained for a year, it would be equivalent to taking 48,616 cars off the road for a year.

Does this mean absolutely NO electricity?

Not at all. Just turn off the nonessential lights for one hour – no lights that affect public safety will be turned off, and no, you won't have to do anything to your refrigerator either.

How do I find out more about this?

Details are available on their website; http://www11.earthhourus.org/
which also includes a short video clip that explains this concept in more detail.

What's been going on.
(Excerpts from http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080329/ap_on_sc/world_lights_out)

Australia - Sydney's iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge went dark Saturday night as the world's first major city turned off its lights for this year's Earth Hour, a global campaign to raise awareness of climate change.

Following Australia, lights will go out in major Asian cities including Manila and Bangkok before moving to Europe and North America as the clock ticks on. One of the last major cities to participate will be San Francisco — home to the soon-to-be dimmed Golden Gate Bridge.

Even popular search engine Google put its support behind Earth Hour, with a completely black page and the words: "We've turned the lights out. Now it's your turn." http://www.google.com/

What will you do?

We did this a while ago at school . It was supposed to be for an hour only but it extended for the whole day .
It started from 10 am . The hallways were dark but it was fun . The hallways seemed ... ghostly , somewhat .
It was fun . And pretty helpful too , I guess .

I wish every light, including street lights, could be deactivated. That way, we could see space It would be so nice and pretty, romantic if you're in love and if there's a shooting star

Oh right that's coming but I find it hilarious that NYC wasn't on that list but I guess safety comes first? I planned on doing so but my city doesn't plan to. Oh well.
