Well....if they release anime with subs....then there's no need for fansubs.....

It's not like everyone understands Japanese.

If they gave me "legal" subs for free, I'll agree with them.

i wouldnt mind if they stopped fansubbing, and japan expanded its broadcasting to encompass south east asia....then i could watch japanese tv, with subs preferrably....

Meh who cares if it's legal or not, as long as I can watch them with good quality subs, I'm fine with it. Also, some fan subbers are quite funny. Like the ones that subbed Code Geass.

Well, if learning a language was quick and/or easy, then I'd have no qualms about learning Japanese really quick, and then just watching it raw. But since we can't just download a language, a la "The Matrix" (in before "I know kung fu", "Whoa...", etc.) yeah, I need subtitles to understand.

I think it's fine to fansub. As long as you buy the real DVD afterwards when its available.

No one can stop fan-subbing. That's like trying to stop people from smoking. Just impossible.
They should think of fansubbers as a sponsor for their anime, like help promoting it. But it's also viewers fault not to buy the orginal DVD. That's why they're pissed off, if more people buy the DVD, the fansubbers won't be in trouble.

Besides copy right issues, fansubbing infringes on different trade clauses, also fraud is an issue. Other then defrauding the respective anime companies, the claim that the fan subbers are mis representing the various animes will be made (i.e. mistranslated scripts or flagrant script changes etc..). The fact that fansubbing takes away from these companies profits is already well know, some of the production companies reported high million-low billion yen loss, which if a number that continues to rise. So if the United States is really going to get involved to stop fansubbing, expect law suits under copy right infringment, federal and international trade clauses, and for the groups that except donations/require money to view expect the Internal Revenue Service to audit then file their own lawsuits. I brought this up in one of my law classes and in the 30 minute discussion we managed to find a whole list of laws being broken, financial damages, and various types of tax evasion issues. So if the hammer comes down, expect it to come down hard. But I feel fansubbing will always continue, it just won't be as wide spread, and you'll see more groups trying to work for or with the anime companies. Simple solution that would work for everyone (except some of the fans) would be for the groups to charge a monthly or per episode amount that will go directly to who ever produced or licensed the respective anime. If their numbers are true, and there is 6 million downloads a week, then the price wouldn't have to be a high one. Figure 10 cents per episode will earn them almost 2 and a half million dollars a month. Or they could sell their own subbed episodes for a small cost and be able to keep more of the profits.

well i see your point: technically speaking... fansubbers can't argue upon the court of law when we're the ones who are put to blame.

sorry guys, i'm just disappointed... if it would boost the anime industry... i'd be glad to give up passion.

Users have to pay money in order to access the higher quality fansubs. That would be considered selling fansubs.

No, that would be considered supporting the site.
Shinji isn't charging for fansubs, higher quality costs more to host, and money doesn't grow on trees. If you don't want to pay, he is still providing free access. He is charging for quality, not the fansubs.

He's restricting access to higher quality fansubs for a fee. That's like giving out cheap beer and selling higher quality alcohol. Low quality streams are worse then youtube and they sound horrible, it's purposely done so that users think about "donating" to get the good quality streams.

I thought that quality was free now... The only thing Crunchyroll supporters get now is a badge... I think.

EDIT-
Ahh.. here is were Shinji anounced it, http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-128737/High-Quality-for-everyone-D.html#8102931

That's just a link to bittorrent. Bittorrent isn't a service that crunchyroll created and it's not streaming video at all. I'm not getting high quality streaming video as a non donating member and there is still a donation system in place since there is a March 2008 badge. Some companies just invested 4 million dollars into crunchyroll so I don't see how they even need donations now. They should have an ad system in place.

well i'm getting free High quality and HD for free??? Maybe you didn't understand the process... if you click on high quality when watching something it ask you to download it. once you download it you can watch free HD and High quality. Hope that helps you. Prove me wrong if you want, but I get it for free and I don't donate.

Doesn't matter how many supporters fansubbers have. If the japanese government continues hunting them down, the law is in their favor.
