At first I thought this question was pretty retarded. Then I remembered playing through Shining Force 2. Now there's an example of respect paid where it isn't due. (Aagh. They released 1 on GBA. Why can't they release 2+ on the DS?)

Normally I don't 'respect' topics whose authors' cannot be bothered to spell 'you' as a three letter word. However, I'll say this about respect. It's fine to have, it's fine to give it. It's toxic to demand it. especially when the one making demands defines what actions 'respect' means.

Respect and honesty, in my humble opinion, are the two best things you can give to someone who deserves it.

Absolutely!

I don't know that respect in and of itself is ever a bad thing.
You can possibly give out respect too often/easily or to the wrong persons. But that's a matter of you, not respect itself.
Actions are important to follow up respect.

But someone should earn respect in order to receive it.

I cannot respect someone who demands respect, especially if they do little to nothing to earn it.

Respect is actually quite terrible when put into prospective,

Just try to think REAL hard of the people you respect but shouldn't......

I respected Hitler for his determination. I hated him for killing the innocent and instructing others to do so.

No, if you respect the authority of a mob boss, you will forever be good.

Respect is what keeps you alive. At least in New York.

Disrespect can get yourself killed.

Uhm naw it's not bad. However respecting somebody and holding somebody in esteem or admiration are very different. I respect my parents, but there's only one human who has ever lived this earth who I truly admire.
