I'm sure many of you have noticed but a lot of teenagers stay up late even if they aren't hanging out. A common complaint is "I'm just not tired that early". For me that was always the case even if there was nothing to do. If I tried to sleep earlier i would lay in bed awake. Some researchers have been studying teenagers sleep and say that because of hormones the bodies sleep-wake cycle changes when we become teens and as we hit early 20's it changes agian, and this is why teens stay up so late and always want to get up later as well. Here's an article I read about it.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/04/20/earlyshow/saturday/askmike/main689727.shtml

The article makes several points about teens doing better when shool starts later becuase it allows them to get the sleep they need. There was also an intersting thing in there talking about teens who get less sleep drive worse and that teens are often not fully awake in the morning ..I find it a bit unnerving to think of half asleep teens driving to school. lol ...

My question (regarding the information) is if research shows that many teens stay up late and sleep in because of a natural biological process, and research also shows that they are not getting enough sleep thus causing harmful side affects should school hours be changed?
Most schools where I live start between 7:30-8. Do you think that starting them later (maybe at 9) whould help teens get more needed sleep and thus improve their studies etc, and if so why are schools not changing?

Ok so I know that there have been some threads on sleep and wht not. personally i think this different because most are just askng what time u go to bed, what you do before bed, etc. but if you think it should be deleted go ahead. lol

Interesting.
Well I take like a two hour nap everyday so I have trouble falling asleep.
When I finally do it's like 12:30 and I get up at 6:50 and leave the house at 7.

Well I wouldn't like to start school later unless we got out at the same time.
Lack of sleep doesn't really affect me in a negative way bc I still do very good
in school. lol

Anyways but I'm sure if teens got more sleep they'd do a little better.
Well idk, it depends.

Good thread!

we had a discussion about this in school in the 11th grade. My school started at 8:10 and i would wake up at 6:30 to catch the yellow bus at 7:10. I remember my first two periods i would always sleep in class and my grades were always shaky. But once i dropped my first class and moved it to after school. My grades sky rocketed back up. I believe that having school start early isnt such a good idea since everyone's usually tired, plus a lot of students stay up late as well. So they dont get as much sleep as they should. I think school should start at 9:30-10.

This is an example why you should make your kids go to bed at 10pm. So whip them from the computers so they wont fall asleep in class.

What the hell, your school starts at 8:10? the public schools usually start at 9. If school starts later which means we have to go home later. This can lead to us stay up late to finish homework. My school starts at 8:30 and ends at 3:30. I usually sleep at 12 and wake up at 7.

lol i think that would help... but then there is the issue of teens biological process keeping them awake ... i didnt have a computer half the time in HS and yet i would still be up late

... I only have a few more years to go. Waking up at 7 every morning is not ideal.

Thats why college is so much better you can either have late classes or early classes! Though I remember in high school it used to start at 7:25 am and I was always so damn tired because I never got enough sleep....
