The Harem Anime Thread
Posted 1/1/07
The harem format of comedy/romance anime has always puzzled me.

1) How do they form, how can writers justify them? What kind of character do they put in the middle of them (the "nexus"). Why should we, as an audience, believe it?

2) Where do you draw the line between gender imbalance and a harem?

3) What was the first harem anime?

4) Does it have to be a female harem? (i.e. Does Fruits Basket count as Harem?)

5) Is it wrong for the "nexus" character to be in that situation in the first place? Or to allow a harem to continue? (Dangerous question, putting Western morality on Eastern culture...)

Take your time, there are no concrete answers, so aside from committing stupidity, you can't go wrong...

I believe the first harem anime, or at least the one that's credited as being the first, is Tenchi Muyo.

Does it have to be a female harem?

:) Nope. There are harem-type series that were created with a female fanbase in mind. Ouran is definitely one of them.

fruits basket to add to that^

I have only seen a few, but sometimes I wonder about how they form. Maburaho is pretty straightforward, the main character has powerful genes and the women are literally after them in the series. Others are more abstract, like Shuffle where all the characters are interested in the guy based upon childhood impressions.

Regardless of how the writers justify the formation, I'm kinda sick of the harem. Mind you, I think there is a difference between rivalry and a harem, and the difference is that the relationship actually goes somewhere. Even though Love Hina is a harem anime, there are plenty of times where characters pull ahead of the pack or burn bridges. Other shows, the main character takes turns dishing out attention for the weak surrounding characters to lap up.

If there can be male harems, shouldn't Fushigi Yuugi get first credit? Cuz when the plot for the whole last season is "everybody loves me but don't get raped", that is such a harem anime (the Suzaku Seven were ALL DUDES).

um, they make harems where one guy is surrounded with beautiful girls who like him and there is another harem where a pretty and sometimes understanding girl is surrounded by many handsome guys. that's called a reverse harem though...

1)I think they form when the main character is surrounded by mostly an all-male or all-female cast when the lead is usually the lead is usually an opposite gender.

2) Imbalance one is like Sailormoon while the harem one is Fushigi Yuugi.

3) That's hard. I first identify Fushigi Yuugi.

4) Personally, there's nothing wrong with it. It's just one variation of flavour in Japanese Pop Culture. However, it tends to annoy people when the lead character is weak or too dependable on the others instead of standing up on their own. It's more towards the characterization. Take Fushigi Yuugi for example. The lead character, Miaka isn't really popular due to her crybaby quirks and "love will prevail" attitude. I don't think there's anything to do with Western morality on Eastern culture as you speak.
