Mercedes SLR McLaren

The new Mercedes SLR McLaren Roadster, debuting in the fall of 2007, with a a carbon-fibre construction like today's Formula 1 cars, has a supercharged V8 engine under the hood of this high-performance sports car which propels it to a top speed of 332 km/h.
Mercedes and its Formula 1 partner, McLaren, have many years of experience with carbon-fiber that is conventionally used in the aviation and space industries. In an impact, carbon fibres have a level of energy absorption that is four to five times higher than that of steel or aluminium, while the weight advantage of this high-tech material over steel is around 50 per cent.
It comes with a fully retractable soft top to combine pure open-air driving bliss with the ultimate in performance. A true super sports car!

Presenting the Dodge Viper SRT10

Presenting the Lotus Elise
#
Performance
4 star rating

The current 1.8-litre variably-valvetimed Toyota four-cylinder engine is the neatest replacement for the ageing Rover K-series that Lotus could have found. There's various tunes, but the one to go for is the 189bhp 1.8R powerband demon that screams all the way to 8500rpm. Performance for such a light car is fast: expect well under six, hitting 60mph in 5.2 seconds.

#
Driving
2 star rating

It's all about the feel in an Elise - so expect to connect to the road not just through your hands but through your bum. The ride feels sharp and craggy after any saloon car, but get the suspension working and you'll notice how fluid the car can be - they get better the faster they go.

#
Space
2 star rating

No, sorry, probably not what you need if you have kids or dogs or even friends with dignity issues. Getting in with the roof on is like posting yourself through a letterbox - even more so in the fixedhead Exige. There is a space behind the engine for a couple of squashy bags but for god's sake don't put the shopping in there because it'll be cooked by the time you get home by heat soak.

#
Build quality
3 star rating

Early cars tended to feel a bit like an extremely well finished kit car, but no more. Every modern Elise feels solid and like it can handle the odd track day without shattering into tiny pieces. They do tend to creak a bit - blame the aluminium chassis and lack of soundproofing - but the very basic nature means that the Elise only sometimes comes a cropper with the seals that sit alongside the pop-in, popout roof bars. Not a big deal.

#
Safety
2 star rating

The original Elise didn't have airbags to save weight, and so the story continues. Even though you can now get a steering-wheel mounted bag, the Elise has very few safety countermeasures, relying instead on an extremely rigid aluminium tub and the ability to get away in the first place. No traction or stability control either, so your destiny is your own.

#
Owning
4 star rating

Probably a sportscar fan's no.1 choice for a car capable of providing a pretty hardcore driving experience without resorting to a racecar. The Elise R is just awesome, and is more car than most will be able to get the best out of, so it's hard to find something that delivers so much for £30k. Be aware that they all carry Group 20 insurance though, and aren't the most practical everyday.

#
Value
4 star rating

The Elise is all good news. Not only is the initial cost reasonable, but a big demand for well-looked after examples make them a big favourite meaning their residuals are excellent. And you might be surprised to learn that their tax bills can be small; the 111S comes in at 27-percent. If you can cope with the obvious impracticality then they aren't that bad an option if you dump the company car scheme and take an allowance.

2007 Hamann BMW M6 Widebody

The "HM/M +60" sport kit provides even better performance. The kit is made up of high performance headers, metallic sports catalytic converters, a sports rear silencer, a sports air filter, an engine map optimisation and the removal of engine restrictions. As the name of the sports kit already suggests, the engine then provides around an additional 60bhp/44kW and can provide an extra 54Nm of torque, meaning that a notably faster top speed of up to 320km/h can be reached

Inspired by the F-22 Raptor fighter jet, US$1.5 million Lamborghini Reventón was unveiled. If numbers mean anything to you – the new supercar is powered by a 650hp 6.5L V12 engine, accelerates from 0-60 mph in just 3.2 seconds and has a maximum speed of 211 mph. The Lamborghini design team used the technical base of their Murcielago LP640, compressed it and then amped it up. As with other current models, the Reventón is defined through its sharp edges, smooth surfaces and aerodynamic lines. Tempted as you may be, put away your cheque books and credit cards, all twenty models that will be manufactured are taken as the Lamborghini brand reinforces its legendary status.
