i feel sorry for the millions of chinese men who are going to be single all their lives because there arent enough chinese women and they refuse to go after women of other races.

fascinating . i didnt know you could use technology to get a boy !

i know alot of asian men that swear if they have kids they have to have a boy, if its a girl they will keep trying till they get a boy . they say it is because they want their family name to continue . o.O

Well, there are some methods to bias the chances toward one or the other but they're expensive. The technique of "use ultrasound to determine the sex, then have an abortion if it's not the sex you want, repeat until you get what you want" has been around as long as ultrasound. People are worried that this is the more common technique. It's actually illegal to do this in China because China already has something like 30 million more men (or soon will) than women, but people still pay bribes and stuff to ultrasound techs to reveal the sex of the child even if it's illegal. Other countries have policies like this too because they don't want people aborting fetuses just due to their sex.

30 million Chinese guys are going to have to either turn gay or find a foreign wife!

Well, there is this tradition in China, at least, which isn't unheard of, where if a family only has girls then a man from a family with multiple sons will marry one and take the girl's family's name. Of course the one child policy kind of screws this up because theoretically nobody ought to have multiple sons.

But outside of China people can have more than one kid so hopefully they'd consider this rather than abortion if they don't get a son.

I don't totally get the whole "carry on the family name" thing anyway, except maybe if you have a rare surname. I mean, there are like 200 million or something people named wáng (王). I don't think we're in danger of 王 dying out as a surname.

thats rather disturbing o.O i had no idea people could be so callous as to have abortions merely to get the son they want . i read up on the subject of embryo selection . and that seems to be far more reasonable than multiple abortions . even though it is rather costly [18,000+ for one session] . i myself have felt the pressure from past b/f's to bear a son . its rather daunting . >.<

Are you saying 30 million guys should be happy with prostitutes, or that they should implement polyandry?

Wanting sons instead of daughters is a thing that had been in Chinese culture for too long to suddenly disappear. It's such an integrated part of our culture that it's difficult to be reasonable about it. It's so bad that there is this Chinese saying that there are 3 ways to be unfilial, and the worst is if you fail to produce an heir. (bu xiao you san, wu hou wei da) Since Chinese culture is patriarchal, that means failing to produce a son would be considered one of the worst things a Chinese can do in failing their parents and the rest of their ancestors.

I do agree that such thinking needs to be reassessed though. It is another gender stereotype that needs to be considered.

why do people think that this is only applies to chinese people? this is like a lot of asian countries i believe including Korea and Japan.

the surname is like a family business. the longer it lasts the better. people dont care if there's a million people with their last name if they're not family because they want to be able to say something like "My family goes all the way back to the _____ Dynasty!" with pride and they want to be able to easily trace their lineage as well.

to asians their name is their pride. thats why its uncommon for the man to marry into the the woman's family. even in america guys think it embarassing to do that lol

Well, the men in China is kind of in a pinch...

Since boys are preferred over girls when it comes to getting children, and the sad fact that a lot of Chinese girls get adopted out of the country, some legally & some illegal.

I wish they would just realise that girls are great too .___.

True, but the other option is to give some of the kids the husband's name and some of the kids the wife's name. It's not like it HAS to be one or the other, and in China anyway the wife doesn't normally change her name to her husband's surname anyway.
