Things may get worse before they get better, but if there's a will there's a way.

isnt this great news

Not for the people who wanto buy their anime dvds.

we;; i dont care i actually get my anime online

That's only making things worse. If people keep illegally downloading it means less money for the anime companies which means less anime being made in Japan.

uhhh one u can dl anime liek gundam 00 which are being sub so i dont care

You totally missed my point.

i get it already the creators wont get money but ppl would still buy gundam 00 on dvd when it comes out on subs too

They're still losing money. There are more fans but there are currently less DVD sales because of fansubs. What anime companies need to do is have a good online distribution plan for people who just want to watch anime and have DVDs for the collectors.

ummm 1 anime companies in the USA sucks 2 i want originals no mods to it 3 DVD sales for both are not steady cause one whole season is like over $100 so thats why ppl download it

1. Geneon USA's departure was sudden and surprising since they were such a good big company but they had it coming to them. All the other companies besides FUNimation have been downsizing because of guess what, illegal downloading hurting business. Instead, Geneon kept releasing more niche shows like "Zipang", "Kamichu", "When They Cry ", and "Rozen Maiden". The Japanese company that owned them didn't know what to do so they just shut them down.
2. The fansubs are just as modified as the official releases if not moreso. You get an English dub and the original Japanese version with a subtitle track, that's it. The fansubs are just one part of an DVD, and they aren't necessarily any better than what you get on a DVD. The one thing I hate about fansubs is that they usually don't even credit the people who actually made the anime, some quality there.
3. You're right, this is where the anime industry needs to change. The American licensors would do it as long the Japanese partners would let them, which I'm sure they will in the near future. My question is, if anime companies started providing reasonable legal alternatives to fansubs, would fans accept it with open arms or just keep demanding completely free anime without waiting for it to be officially released outside of Japan?

its no use this is over fansubs take long to sub plus putting credit will make the whole subs useless it will lag and wont sync plus anime is released out of japan online on some site on the day an anime comes out so then fansubs get their hands on them and if japan did something about it then fansubs will still be able to find them

Geneon was doomed from the start. They pulled away from Pioneer originally because they kept fucking up their releases REALLY bad and nobody was buying their stuff anymore, then they made Geneon and was doing okay in general, but then they started to fuck with the anime releases AGAIN and this time they didnt survive the backlash, which is too bad because I wanted FATE / STAY NIGHT and ROZEN MAIDEN... and you cant get the first 5 vols of FATE anymore either - nobody has them. Sucks... I've been buying up tons of Geneon series wherever I can find them - good prices too like half off.

You know I keep seeing Fate/Stay Night at Best Buy so its interesting me that people are having trouble finding it. Depends on where you are in the country I guess.

There are many problems when it comes to the industry. If there was not such a lag between the time an anime gets to the states and the time it shows in Japan that would prolly deter at least some of the illegal downloading because it would cut on the need to fansub a series in the first place. I understand the lag because of subbing and dubbing but when the lag is simply because the companies are wrangling over contracts and the fine print....

The companies are going to have to do some real thinking about what would work for them. Look at Central Park Media their business really took a dive the past couple years. Now they've moved into licensing/releasing yaoi & shonene-ai and I understand things have improved for them. They don't have to pay for dubbing since the releases are subbed only but that seems to be just fine with yaoi fans. CPM has found there niche. Geneon should have done the same before folding the way they did.

On the surface: Deal with ADV not going through = oops, there goes plan A for Geneon USA. Now they're resorting to cutting costs, in the form of employees/departments.

Under the surface: They could be suffering a lot more than we think they are, maybe to the point of going broke. Course of action would probably be to pull out of the US market. If this is the case, who knows what they'll do with their licensed work.

Or maybe they're just restructuring/redesigning their business model, like they claim to be (by "focus[ing] on their portfolio"). If this the case, they'll just find new distributors in the US to sell their licensed work. Or maybe they'll just exclusively distribute in Japan to increase the relative value of their products in the form of expensive imports.

Essentially this hurts DVD buyers who are currently collecting unfinished sets distributed by Geneon USA the most.

Geneon still owns their property, it's just a matter of what they're gonna do with it. Best case scenario I could probably see is them selling licenses to smaller companies who don't go to similar lengths to prevent uploading onto CR. But even then, that'd probably boil down to an ethical thing for the moderators who have the final say in what stays and goes.

well i been wondering what gotta happen to all the dvd tiltes that is not finish and all the new one that haven't been to usa yet, because as it is now, japan geneon still up and running and still making lots more anime over there and usa geneon shut down, so i wanted to know if the other anime studio willing to take over the missing volume and getting more new anime and make more copy of anime dvd that people are having hard times finding/buying them in usa?
