you guys realize that as a waiters we have to pay tax for the food you guys eat, right? Last year when i worked as a waiter, I got paid $2.14 an hour+ tip. some of you are thinking , thats awesome that if every table leaves 2-3 dollars, we are making a killing. Thats not true, considering that we get average of 4 tables a night, average customer stay is at least 1 hour- hour and half....if all of them only left 2-3 dolars, that is less than minimum wage. the tip is 15% or more of what the total meal cost, not 2 times the tax. Whenever I go out and eat, I usually leave at least 50% tip depending on service, usually $1 tip per drink refill without asking , if crappy service, I leave 15%, and if service is awesome and server is very attractive at least 60% tip, hehe

also realize we have to share tips with the hostess and the Bar staff, so we dont really make that much money if moat of you guys only leave 5% tips.

In the country where i live, giving tip is asking for trouble..

In what country do you live?

i live in Japan. In Japan, tip is like... something that ones shouldn't receive because it's not their right.

I worked in a resturant so I know what it is like to get a great tip, it make you feel great. Lately, I have found myself tipping more generously, towards 20%. I know 15% is about the medium but I don't like nickle and diming all that much. Frankly, I would like to be know as being generous. Besides, wait staff remember good tippers and will generally try to ensure good service in the future.

i usually tip about $5+ but one of my friend never tips no matter how good the service it was.

My former mentor said that she feels bad if she dont give a tip. Why? Because she was a waitress once, and she knows what they feel. So she always gives a tip no matter how the service was.

Two reasons?

1. You must be freaking rich!

2. You go out to eat rarely.

when we're overseas, for people who carry our luggage for us, we usually tip them like $10-$100.
depends again.
but in terms of food. if the change is like around $5 or what, then yeah we'll leave it there.
cos usually we dont go to those duper high class restaurant. so yeah.

I always tip about 20%. More than that is just unnecessary. The only people that I give bigger tips to are my fav waiters/waitresses or the people that work their asses off.

There's already a 10% service charge included in the bill in Singapore for those fancy eating places.

The biggest tip I've left was $10. IT seems now gratuity is included so there really isn't a need to tip someone, cause they're tip is included. Bug I do make sure to tip atleast $5.00 or more when necessary.
