There are two that stand out to me as favorites, Utawarerumono and Yume Miru Kusuri: A Drug That Makes You Dream. Both have great stories and great characters. So yeah buy it you wont reget it.

Visual Novel - is an interactive fiction game featuring mostly static graphics, usually with anime-style art.
Animate - Referring to a living thing
If you want to get technical, anything drawn about humans, or living things and the aliens are living... just in the game, (or made by computer programs) is considered Animation. UT 3 is INTERACTIVE and FICTIONAL and is an anime-style art. So basically I did answer the question to this post correctly and fully and without error.

Super late reply, but who cares.

Visual Novel doesn't have any action where you control where you move yourself. It's like a book, where you sometimes come to a crossroad and have to decide left or right. The story matters more than the action.

To use the words of a friend, a visual novel is:

text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, CROSSROAD OF CHOICES, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, text, CROSSROAD OF CHOICES, text, text, text, text, text,

And so on.

So, no you didn't reply correctly to the thread.

Hmm, looks like "best" is being used in this thread as a synonym for "personal favorite." (After all, "best" is difficult to quantify...)

Anyway, here's what I'm currently enjoying:

* Heartache 101 ~Sour into Sweet~. It's a freeware game, being created by the same person who made The PK Girl and Idolcraft. It's mostly worksafe. So yeah, Heartache 101 does not have a unique story, but it has some fascinating gameplay concepts. And it is intended to be modified -- fans can write their own story, or use their own characters.

* Heian Love. It's a reverse harem story, available only for iOS devices. Not exactly unique, but it's a not-too-serious look at upper class life in Japan's Heian era.

I can't really describe Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side DS or LovePlus as visual novels. They're complex simulation games about fictional relationships. But I've been able to enjoy them, thanks to a full fan-made translation of the former, and a partial translation of the latter.
