Ever noticed when your on the motorway that sometimes traffic slows down and comes to a grinding halt for no apparent reason.
I'm not say that there was a crash or anything, there's no obstructions and yet it still happens.

The way it works is:

Lets say everybody is going at national speed limit (UK - 60 mph)
The driver infront spots a hazard and slows down using the footbrake to quickly lower speed slightly.
The driver behind sees the brake lights and also slows down and try to calculate that they braked for a reason so they brake just a bit more to keep a safe distance.
This process repeats which slows traffic down, untill it comes a point where on the road traffic is hardly moving or not at all.

This is mainly effected at rush hour with many vechiles on the road, so each safety gap (2 seconds) is filled.
---------
Heres a youtube video from 'new scientist' showing that theory being tested.

Shockwave, Rubber band effect, feeback, rollback effect.
Yea people call it by different names but its still the same thing. They all describe the same type of motion of the cars stopping one after the other.

Its quite an interesting phenomenon this.
Thats also why reducing speed limits actually makes you faster?!

Dont you just hate it when your driving, and the driver in front of you decides to cause an accident... and since you are right behind him/her, there is like virtually no chance to dodge it. That's what happened to my friend in her prelude... she was left with a bruised face....
This story has no point and is not related to this topic....

I don't know what you mean by brake checking.... I wasn't talking about checking your brakes...

I was just going on about how some people don't pay attention when they are driving- and ended up causing an accident.

Bad habits also eeeerks the hell out of me. Like the other day, I saw a lady powdering her face while she was making a left turn!....

It was such a good thing for everyone else that her elbows didn't slip... [yes, she was steering with em bows] It was in a very busy area with pedestrians walking about.

most where i live its because of the places where highways cross and where theres popular places to get on the highway and so people slow down to switch lanes and things but the times of the day that it happens are short and it never stops completely.

Break checking is when someone break IMMEDIATELY to piss/scare/fck the person behind them because they are either tailgating the driver, a street "racer", or have their High-Beams on.

Interesting. Very interesting. I'd like to try that in a roundabout.
