I would pull over an help... but all I can do is change a tire. (and if you can't change a tire then don't bother driving a car)
Most people have a mobile phone and insurance. 95% of the time they are just waiting for the road side assistance to show up.
The other 5% are either dummies with out road side assistance... or are actual axe murderers.

Car on the side of the road, I would not want to help them because I have no freaking idea how a car works and/or how to change a flat. If I were to help them/mess it up and they were to get hurt for that I would never be able to live with myself.

I only rarely help people I don't know, mainly because in the past I've been yelled at, cursed at, pushed, and such all because I wanted to be a decent person and help someone.

I don't only blame the media, I mean if you leave your door unlocked anywhere in the town where I live, chances are your house is getting robbed without question. As a kid house robberies in my street were super rare, like once a year rare. Now it happens every month. My parents said back in their time you could leave your stuff unlocked and it would be fine.

The genuine "Help thy brother", "Teach a man to fish", "Do unto others" genuine caring mentality seems to be rare and/or pointless with most of the people I come across in life, which is why I'm trying to change my way of thinking and doing things too. People don't help the man who stumbles and falls anymore, they just step over him or step on him to get where they need to go.

I know what you mean. Nobody can be trusted these days, we're constantly fed shocking and depressing stories through the news. Infact, I was reading the national Newspaper the other day and honest...there was nothing positive in there. It was all negativity "Downfall, corruption, murder, attacks." I came away so depressed at how stupid the world is today. Also the recession means everyone is out for themselves and couldn't care less about strangers. Its sad -__- but reading things on text-feed websites where people share their cool, funny, inspirational real life stories helps. This was a favourite one I shall copy + paste:

"I had dropped my purse today, it had $300 of cash in it, credit cards, drivers license, everything! I back-tracked the streets I walked on searching endlessly for it crying. Then a man covered in piercings, tattoos, with a mohawk and dressed in tough leather tapped me on the shoulder and said 'I think this is yours' and handed me back my purse. I'll never judge a book by its cover again."

CONSPIRACY! IT'S A CONSPIRACY TO ISOLATE US ALL!

The current media concentrates on the most inflammatory, twisted news. Reason? Because it gets more watches, more feed. More people are watching because it's a play at curiosity and keeping up with the news.

After awhile of that, people have become engrained with the thought it may happen to them. That the world is so crapsack, they can't do anything but look after themselves.

And it's true.

Why do you think our mentality has changed? Is it due to the news, where we are constantly being fed fear through the televison, so the news can get ratings?
Absolutely. Things like plane crashes and serial killers are pretty uncommon, but we can name them / think of them, can't we? Why? The media focuses on these things. I don't know the statistics on whether crimes have increased or not, but I bet our coverage of them has skyrocketed in the past, say, couple decades.

Is it that things were as bad in the past, but people were just retarded?
I don't think so. I think people may have been naive or ignorant, but not "retarded". And I'm not saying for sure whether anyone was naive or ignorant, either.

Are people worse now, than they were before? Has the culture of instant gratification made people feel entitled to too much, and therfore corrupted them?
Are people worse now? Hmm... No, I don't think so. I think as a whole, society has progressed and gotten better. I'm optimistic, though. I think "instant gratification" may have corrupted society to a degree, but not horribly so. I don't think people feel entitled, I think they want change and improvement, and that's a good thing if they go about it in a productive/proactive way.
