Do video games cause/encourage violence?
Posted 1/7/07
i guess you're right. it is partly the parents influence on the child...but there are still some idiots who are easily swayed the media and become violent because they are stupid. again its really up to the intelligence of the person if they will become violent or not

I think it all depends on the person playing. Some people tend to be highly impressionable and can try to emulate what they see in video games. This is also known as being an idiot.

I mean I just heard on the radio about some kid who 'accidentally' hanged himself trying to impersonate the saddam hussein execution. WTF?

I don't think it's right to say playing violent games will cause violent behavior. People who start displaying violent behavior didn't learn it from the games they played, they probably got the idea from a bunch of sources. (TV, Parents maybe) That and/or they were capable of violence to being with.

i honesly believe that games do not cause violence. maybe only feul it but thats all. i mean, come on! we all no its not real. you cant really get killed then spawn again. but games are there to let people who play them escape reality for a bit. it is true that you can get too caught up in it... like those people who died of fatigue (or something like that) because they spent days on the net playing a game, without moving around or exercising after a bit. violence is caused when people are raised to have no patience or alot of jeloucy for others. i have done sociology and Psychiatry and this was a big thing covered in there.

Having said this, im gonna go play Gears Of War then run outside and replay the game on the people that live within a miloe radius of me. lol.

yes and no. as Rhynny said it can be used as stress relief etc. However going on it too long is bad for you mentally and so can cause bad behaviour. I think its only a problem when younger children with a not-so-great upbringing arent diciplined when it comes to computer games.

On the contrary, they keep me from violence.

Because if I didn't have some place to vent my frustrations or cure my boredom, I might just take up to homicide one day out of said boredom and pent anger.

On the downside though, most online americans annoy me. Irony is that I'm america to a degree. And children make me absolutely livid. I constitute a child as anyone younger than me physically and/or mentally.

In short, no. Not for me.

I would say yes in some cases. When i look at myself playing counter striker and other fps games my temper raises to a very high limit and if anybody is near me when I am playing a blame and insult them thinking it is their fault that i died. That is the reason why i never play fps games.

But when I am playing World of Warcraft I usually am pretty calm since it is a more slow gameplay so I can keep my head cold.

Younger kids gets affected by computer games in a way that may make them have problems with behavior. Playing violent games makes some kids more violent because they think they can smack other people in their faces without them getting hurt.

So there might be a reason why computer games come with a +age printed on them.

it depends on the person. some people with good morals, values, etc. the video games they play don't affect you, but i think some video games make people more competetive and a little more violent (since in most video games the object is to kill the other players). i also know a few kids that play many video games that have gotten into fights.....
