yes its not that 40 is old but for anime its just uncommon i mean yeah one of my friends dad likes watching anime but only when he is drunk(no offense).

I recently got my 53-year-old father into anime (which really surprised me). I think that they find a show that captures their imagination, pretty much anybody can gwet into anime.
Of course, some people are just opposed to anything that is comparatively new--the Youth Department head at my library is hardcore opposed to having anime and manga in the library. Luckily, there isn't really a whole lot she can do to prevent it from entering the collections, if that's what people want. I think even a lot of trashy manga is better that those Mary-Kate and Ashley (ugh...) paperbacks we have, and those aren't getting weeded anytime soon.

Out of curiousity, what anime got you father into it? I couldn't get my father to sit through more than 5 minutes of GITS. MY mother understsands anime a bit more than she used to (she watched the Love Hina XMas special and a fair amount Kare Kano with me, and while I wouldn't say she liked it more than what she usally watches, she was interested in it). I've been thinking of trying to show my parents Cowboy Bebop since they both loved Firefly when I brought that home to watch (the series and the movie).

Though he did seem oddly interested NGE when I was watching it with a friend at their house, but I'd be wary showing that to him given certain.. situations... that occur later in the series.

My home library was great about stocking alot of manga, though their video selection was very neglected regardless of anime. Haven't checked out any local ones here where I live yet though. (IMO all libraries should at least have some Miyazaki, regardless of their oppinion on anime).

The only anime i got my dad to watch was Spirited Away.

There isnt really anything about age concerning video games. What generation do you think "started" Nintendo

Hehe I also remember with SNES, I use to spend time at my aunt and uncles all the time and my uncle and I would play Donkey Kong all the time. He was better at it then me

It was Planetes (My dad follows the US space program quite closely. He used to work as a conractor to United Aerospace doing industrial photography, and he took some of the pictures of parts recovered from the Challenger accident.) My mom really likes Cowboy Bebop, and my dad has showed interest in it. It's kinda funny to me, just because several years ago (well...nearly a decade now) my parents were wildly opposed to me seeing Princess Mononoke.

And yes, I agree; Miyazaki is essential to any library collection. I recently got pretty excited, because I was asked to compile a list of anime for a new area library to purchase for their collections (to the rest of the local library staff, apparently I'm an "expert")

I've been putting off watching Planetes for a while now. I know it's good, I've just been lazy.

Man, I envy you there... getting to pick out a library selection. I think we can ALL agree the "Bible Black" is the best foundation for any library collection. :P

I hear what you mean on parents.. I'll never forgot what my mom said after seeing the first X-Men movie.. "why didn't you read these when you were younger?" Dumbfounded, I recalled the year or so I spent begging to be allowed to buy comics (X-Men in particular) when I was junior high, but she deemed them "satanic" and thus verboten (likewise, nearly a decade prior).

Parents. Can't live with them and certainly can't live without them.

I believe the first game I played was Mortal Kombat on Super Nintendo, I could be wrong. I still have it though. Does anyone remember Circus Charlie? It's the game where you are a clown and you have to go though obstacles. The first stage you jump through fire hoops riding a lion. That game was so fun.

The first game(s) I ever played that I can remember would be Super Mario Brothers and Duck Hunt. I was either 4 or 5 years old. Those were the days.
