I'll admid this: I really wanted to become a manga artist but since I live in America, I don't think there's an opportunity to become one since I hardly see any american manga artist. Second of all, since my dad is in this terrible sickness stage that cost a lot of hospital money... I don't think being a manga artist can make a lot of money for his hospital fees... Furthermore, does being a manga artist/animator get enough money to even feed yourself?

Yes, especially if you do really well. Ken Akamatsu, the creater of Love Hina, AI Love You, and Negima has a nice ass crib. His wife's pretty hot too.

yeah of course. They earn enough money to feed themselves but surely not enough to live a super life!

It depends on how your story progresses.
But yes its very possible. as long as you have many people to introduce it to.

I'm actually in a similiar situation as you except I'm debating if I should become an animator. I did a lot of research and animators in Japan don't make that much money. They make about 20 000 american dollars on average or less. But the popular animators seem to be doing fine. I heard a lot of bad stories about how animators have to live with their parents to survive since they get paid so little and refuse to give up their job. But if you animate in america, you can earn an average 50 000 dollars and up. The only problem is, americans don't make anime. There are a couple americans who try to imitate anime and it comes out the total opposite like micky mouse. My best bet is you try animating for games in america since theres plenty of pretty good games out there made by americans (assasin's creed).

i think you are rich but pretty damn miserable if your a manga artist/animator. if i were you, id prob pick a better job, like an engineer or something....but oh well,...its okay if you don't give a care about what i say

It depends on how popular your series is. Obviously, if a lot of people like it, you'll make big bucks. Rumiko Takahashi was one of the richest ppl in japan. Or if you're hired by pixar or something. Then again, a lot of mangaka end up working other jobs like (delivery food or as assistants to other mangaka) before they get enough money or have enough material to publish. Personally, i think its a risky business, but then again, if its wat you really enjoy, go for it.

I think if you really are interested, then go for it. Its not like the money isn't enough to make a living of off. You have the basics and a little more. I'd rather do a job that pays less but is something i really want to do as opposed to doing a job that pays more money but is something boring or uninteresting.

That's one of the things I really want to know but the only way to get that answer is to ask 2 or more mangakas. .-.
I don't really know how much a mangaka makes, I heard that a mangaka's pay is dictated by sales.
Though it's possible that's only for people who write doujin/doujinshi.
I don't know much about how much mangakas get paid. .__.

My opinion, make lots of fans, fans are the lifeblood of manga. More fans = more $$$.
But don't make profits more important than fans. Hmmm...I think I went off-topic.

Just assume that sales have to be more than the production cost, at least enough to create another volume and than some to survive. .-.
Worst comes to worst, just get a side-job. .__.
