What is you're favorite type of weapon and why?
This topic is more tilted toward Historic bladed weapon than Anime ones.
This is mainly like if YOU yourself were to use a weapon for real combat.

Also you might add what kind of training you've had in the weapon or what kind of training you'd seek for the weapon.

If you like, post your second favorite too.

Please don't provide simple answers to the why part. For instance "It's cool" or "It looks badass" aren't the greatest answers for why you like a weapon. Liking a weapon because your favorite anime or movie character likes it isn't a very good reason either. Be in depth.

This is a discussion topic, so to get discussions going, when each person posts their favorite weapon, they should first comment on another's weapon.

Remember; Disagreeing with someone is not bad. It just means two people have a difference of opinion. So there should be no flaming going on here. Be respectful. Friendly debate is alright and can be lots of fun, but a flaming argument is stupid and often destroys a thread.

I'll start off.

My favorite weapon is a katana. Not because it's popular, but rather because I have been trained to use it through nearly 7 years of Iaijutsu practice. Therefore, such a thing would more devastating in my hands than another sword in which I haven't had formal training in as a sword is just an object which holds far more effective in the hands of a person specifically trained to use it. Other than that, a Katana is used primarily to cut. It is one of the most effective cutting weapons in the pre-modern world. Therefore, it would feature a swift kill to an unarmoured enemy rather than a arming or bastard sword which blade was dulled to prevent breaking and was used to rather bash an armour clad someone to death and then pierce through them when their down.

My second favorite weapon would be a tossup between a rapier and a tactical combat knife.
I'd pick the combat knife since the rapier would prose less useful. My grandfather, A veteran infantryman of the US Army who fought in both WW2 and the Korean War taught me how to use a knife. How to throw it and how to fight with it. I have a good Ka-bar or two around my place. I would use this since it is small I could conceal it easily.

My favorite weapon will always be the Katana for its razor-sharp blade and its beautiful design.

My second favorite is the the Tachi, like the katana, I like its design and razor-sharp edge especially those tachis with gold inlays.

Third is the Yari.

And fourth is the Yumi.

Ok, then I would like to learn Tennen Rishin-ryu cuz its the technique used by several members of the Shinsengumi, or Mugai-ryu cuz there's an iaido club here that teaches that technique.

You should definitely learn here before even touching a real sword.

Forget the real sword, invest in a good strong oak bokken.

There's no problem with that its easy to find a bokken here in my place, there's a lot of carpenters who can make one and I get to choose the type of wood.

my favorite weapon?

now lets see... there are lots of weapons to choose from but since katana has already been said and sword would be redundant- I'll say shield.

a sheild (though mainly used for defence) could be used as a blunt weapon so its multipurpose. I'm pretty sure a buckler pounded into your face would leave you in bad condition. It can also carry a crest or symbol which pertains to your kingdom which is something that most other weapons cannot. You could use it to wear down your opponent seeing as it takes less energy to block with a shield than to swing a weapon.

the best offence is a good defence i suppose

Interesting. A shield can no doubt me used as a weapon.
However that brings a question; Does a defensive object that can be used as a weapon considered a weapon?
I believe because of A) it's primary purpose is defending, and anything can be used as a weapon, then it wouldn't be considered a weapon. It is open for debate though.

I believe a piece of paper can be used as a weapon in the right hands.

the definition of weapon is this

1. device designed to injure or kill: a device designed to inflict injury or death on an opponent

2. something used to gain advantage: something used as a way of getting an advantage in a situation
A teacher’s best weapon can be humor. ( or in my case- A sheild wearing down a swinging swordsman)

3. zoology animal’s protective part: an animal part, for example, claws, used for defense or attack

If I were to go by the second definition than the sheild does indeed apply as a weapon. If we were to go by the first definition, its argueable. Anything can kill, the question is if it was designed to kill. Of course the sheild was used in order to defend but it is true than many shields had been outfitted with spikes which could be used to puncture an opponent.

A rock can be used as a weapon because maybe at that moment the best design for something to inflict damage was that rock. If I had to throw something at somebody and hurt them, a ball of lint wouldn't wouldn't work. A rock would because its dense and heavy, so its design is more formidable. Its not designed by a person, but its design was sufficient.

The second definition differs as it is not related to offense or combat. Same as the third. It is a figure of speech.

You're right that it depends on if it is designed to kill or injure.
Though many things are not designed as such, anything can be used as such.

In legal terms, a pocket knife is not a weapon because it is not created with intent or purpose to injure, attack, or kill someone.
