At the first ever New York Anime Festival, publisher Del Rey Manga announced a new project to produce original English manga (OEM) based on some of Marvel Comics' biggest characters. X-Men: The Manga and Wolverine: The Manga are both due in Spring 2009. Each will be two volumes, published in the traditional manga style: roughly 200 pages at the 5 X 7 ½" size with a black and white interior. The books will read left-to-right.

Although they will utilize characters from Marvel lore, the books will radically deviate from the style of the superhero comics. At the announcement panel, Del Ray Manga's Associate Publisher Dallas Middaugh said, "We're aiming this squarely at the manga audience." He went on to say that, "While we're trying to be very true to the characters… there is very little of this that is continuity-based."

Therefore, X-Men: The Manga will be a shojo title, marketed specifically to teenage girls. Editor Tricia Narwani called it "like X-Men meets Fruits Basket." The story will still be set in the School For the Gifted. Unlike previous X-Men incarnations, it will be an all-boys school, with Kitty Pryde as the only female student (and protagonist). In the manga, she is "torn between the popular Hellfire Club, led by the flame-throwing mutant Pyro—and the school misfits, whom she eventually bands together as the X-Men."

In preliminary concept sketches, Jean Grey, Mystique, and Wolverine were shown. Although the title will touch on deep, dramatic themes, Narwani promises a mix of drama and light comedy. In addition, Middaugh hinted that new characters are a possibility.

An X-men manga sounds promising but will it be appreciated, you guys might have heard of this but are your thoughts????? Wolverine looks GAY!!!!!

I think this will be interesting...but it would ruin the original characters,story..etc....the outcome myt be similar to as american industry taking japanese anime and making it their own...disgusting...whahah however, i think that this x-men manga will be interesting....

Uhhh...Well I do have to say that I like how Jean Grey looks, but X-Men is practically godly as is...I mean, sure the movies sucked, but who can deny the amazing goodness of the drawings and story in the comics? I can say that as long as they stick to the story, it won't suck, but it will be different... >.>

Oh man. That made me laugh.
Can't ruin Wolverine though. Whether he becomes an anime character or not.
Though...his anime character is a disgrace. Doesn't even have the feel of the true Logan. Looks like a 17 year old kid, and Logan didn't gain his mutant powers until he was an adult.

But as we all know, manga and anime creators are superb storytellers, they are capable of giving immense depth to this manga's plot.

Im sorry as much as i love manga i dnt think this will work. they should just keep as the way it is now. i mean look at logan. in the comics he is a complete badass and now look at him. i could beat the living crap out of him with a bat. and dnt ever get me started on magneto( what have they done to u). but i will give it a try but i will probably turn it down for a gd graphic novel of the x-men series though.

i think that they should stop this project..i mean i really dont like the fact that they are turning the x-men that i grew up reading/watching in to characters that look and seem to be pussys.....they should leave American titles and Japanese titles alone.....enough of this first batman and now this?
