I'm gonna be really honest here.
I love Death Note, but after looking at all these people saying that it's the best anime ever and how Light and L are the smartest anime characters ever, it made me think...what was so good about it. It was slightly original with the entire Death Note and "Write the name in the Death Note and they will die" thing, but it felt like it was missing something. I hear statements like "Light and L are so smart."
I would say they're cunning or vigilant, but not smart.
Einstein was smart. Alexander Graham Bell was smart.
Light and L....
I never thought in any instance that they did something so outrageously genius that I would have never came up with that. Oh I'm so brilliant. I am so smart that I should keep a piece of the Death Note with me because I might need it later on.... or I'm so smart that I am gonna hide a TV in this bag of chips so I won't get caught. That sounds like wearing a hood so you won't get caught listening to music in the middle of class.
This was disappointing because the premise of the story was that it was supposed to be a big rivalry between two geniuses. What's more about this rivalry is that after L died, it didn't have that same feeling with Near and Mellow. Also, Light was supposed to be L's friend, but I never got the feeling that they liked each other.
What about the fact that Light never really found out L's name. He didn't come up with any brilliant idea to find out L's name. He just used extortion. It's kind of basic. Light blackmailed Rem because he could and that was that.

I know character development isn't really needed, but anime with character development is just better because you become more connected to the character. For a while, you sort of saw Light become more insane, but at one point it seemed like he was already insane to begin with. He was killing without hesitation from the beginning. It was that hard to predict that he would eventually use his family members.

I really love Death Note, but I'm just saying that it's not the be all end all best anime that ever was and will be. It still is brilliantly told and set the perfect atmosphere. Light and L had one of the most intense rivalries in anime history and even though they didn't seem like Geniuses, it was still battle of wits taken to a new level.

I guess I was expecting something along the lines of Light being unable to kill L because L is really HIS FATHER and Light is really adopted.
For the record, I'm not stupid, I know L is too young to be his father and the entire idea is cliche. I mean that I was expecting so much more.

A lot of times the people that say a great mainstream anime is the best anything are either easily pleased or don't/haven't watch(ed) much anime.

Yeah, but I haven't heard anybody say anything about Death Note and I just wanted to prove that it isn't void of flaws.

The film is different from the anime/manga. The Movie had some changes from the manga, but I didn't like it. I love the manga series though.

The epic writing seasons made me laugh too much to take the anime 'that' seriously.

The only good things about it are the character design, the plot, and the art.

Can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not but the OST is pretty good as well.

Truth.

I think it is slightly overrated, but not as bad as some other animes such as Naruto and Bleach.
