Gear Second

Gear Second is Luffy's first innovation of his Devil's Fruit abilities. First used against CP9's Blueno, the technique gives Luffy an incredible burst of speed and strength and the cost of his stamina.

The technique is activated when Luffy uses his legs as pumps to get blood flowing much faster within his body. The blood pressure would cause the organs of a normal person to burst, but because of Luffy's rubber traits, his body can handle this pressure. Because of this increased blood flow, more oxygen is delivered to his muscles, acting almost like a steroid, as said by CP9's Rob Lucci. In this state, Luffy's skin is tinted red as a result of the blood flow, and because of his body heat rising as a result, he sweats, but it is quickly evaporated from his skin, causing steam to rise from his body.

This technique has multiple downsides. The first is Luffy's quick loss of stamina, which means that the technique can only last for a short period of time, and he will be drained afterward. Secondly, as mentioned by Rob Lucci, he is damaging his body by using it, and potentially shortening his life, though Luffy says that is body just isn't used to it yet. And effect on his life span is not known for sure.

Gear Third

Gear third is Luffy's second alternative use of his Gomu Gomu no Mi abilities. First used, but not seen, to break through a massive steel door in Enies Lobby, this technique allows Luffy to greatly increase his stength and power, but slows him down in effect.

To use this technique, Luffy inhales a large amount of air, and plugs his mouth using his thumb. He then bites into the joint of his thumb, and exhales, allowing the air to enter into his bones, thus taking advantage of the elasticity of his rubber bones. The limb of his arm is blown up to massive size, but unlike a technique such as his Gomu Gomu no Fuusen, the limb remains hard rather than becoming balloon like. Luffy's torso acts as a transfer point for the air, which can be distributed from limb to limb through the bones and joints. This technique was first used in combat against Rob Lucci, who was quick to take advantage of it's slow speed, but only after taking several significant blows.

Like Gear Second, Gear Third has multiple downsides. The first is, as previously mentioned, Luffy's speed in this state is significantly slower. There is the slight upside that this technique can be used after Gear Second, because it does not require the stamina that Gear Second requires. The second is an aftereffect which causes Luffy to enter a "chibi" state, in which he is shrunken to only about a quarter of his size. Only seen twice, it appears that Luffy does not have the ability to use his rubber abilities in this state. This "chibi" state lasts only several minutes, but leaves Luffy very vulnerable. So far Luffy's only strategy for defense in this state is to run away and/ore hide.

Those are really kool techniques i stopped watching it when he came to the time when he was gonna fight that guy but i stopped right before the fight started with that guy cause it got bring too much fillers. But now that he has thesse abilities i think i will rewatch from the part where i was left. And can somebody tell me what episode it is where his new abilities appear?

Ok i know many people love it or hate it. For me, i just can't seem to get myself to watch it. The drawing is pretty bad compared to animes around, but i dun care about drawings. It is the characters ABILITY and LOOKS that makes me not want to watch it. Stretching arms kinda looks silly and all...i watched some "cool" fight scenes and i didnt' find it cool....

why do YOU guys watch it? I just want opinions why people watch it...

...... with the current state of CR expect this thread to become HEAVALY flamed soon, and to answer your question before flame and fail sets in, I watch OP because it has, of all the current "Big 3" shonnen mangas", the most well developed plot, nothing happens in OP without a reason and effect on the story later on and everything happens to futher each individual charaters personal development.

id agree with that if u give one piece a chance ull see it is a very good show and i think the artwork and voice acting is great it really captures each characters individual personalities and they are not tooo cliched

The storyline is very solid and there's barely any fillers out of 350 episodes compared to Naruto and Bleach

well their r fillers in op but u will hardely notice them for 1 reason they r soo good that they dont feel like filers

It's um...unique I guess.

The drawing style might be a little different from other anime, and the "ability" is also different...but that's what make it unique ^^

Well to me Luffy simply rules.Try watching OP till you get to Arlong it really get interesting from there . Watching cut-off fighting scenes is cool but you must first adapt to the art style , so watch episodes in chronological order and then give us your OP opinion . I am 80% sure it will be positive one but if you are newbie to anime (watched 800 anime episodes or less ) consider watching other animes(art styles that you like ) than switch to OP.

I second that. And, to further that, I also enjoy OP's sense of humour, especially when compared to the other "Big 3" shonnen.

what are the 'big 3'?

I hav noticed something all people that dony like OP hav no argument on hand against it They hav no solid reason they never give examples 4 plot blunders or repetation and dragging they cant find anything wrong with it except oh its drawing is bad.And they dont even stop to think that how SHALLOW they look when they say this.OP has best plot ,best character developation original fight sequences beat humor and some really strong bad asses

WOw. . .This is Tame compare to other's when the topic is OP. . .Hahahah I bet I know why, no one has said anything bad about it yet.

Anyway, doesn't this fall under one Piece thread?

As for why I love this series? it has everything. .. even romance but the romance i am talking about is the romance of dreams and goals and friends and etc. . .there are so many sides of love that you have to look past the big one into the other smaller things that make up the feeling of love.
