VIZ MEDIA SECURES LANDMARK AGREEMENT
TO MAKE DEATH NOTE ANIME SERIES
AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD

Innovative Agreement Will Provide Episodes On A Download To Own/Rent Basis Soon After They Air In Japan

San Francisco, CA, January 10, 2007 – VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), one of the entertainment industry's most innovative and comprehensive publishing, animation and licensing companies, has announced that it has licensed from Nippon Television Network Corporation (NTV) the Download to Own (DTO) and Download to Rent (DTR) rights for the United States for the smash hit DEATH NOTE anime series, currently airing in Japan.

The deal is significant because it marks the first time a well known Japanese anime property will be made legally available to domestic audiences for download to own while the title still airs on Japanese television. VIZ Media will seek to make the series available to consumers through a number of online providers in order to reach the widest audience possible.

DEATH NOTE, based on the Shueisha manga series of the same name, is currently one of the hottest anime titles in Japan. Published in North America by VIZ Media, it depicts the adventures of Light Yagami, an ace student with great prospects but who is bored out of his mind. All of that changes when he finds the Death Note, a notebook dropped by a rogue Shinigami death god. Any human whose name is written in the notebook dies, and now Light has vowed to use the power of the Death Note to rid the world of evil. But when criminals begin dropping dead, the authorities send the legendary detective L to investigate, and he is soon hot on the trail of Light, who must now reevaluate his one noble goal.
“We are pleased to team with a leading anime and manga company like VIZ Media to bring the DEATH NOTE anime series to eager fans in the United States digitally,” states NTV Spokesperson. “VIZ Media understands how the Internet can be used to distribute content. With a built-in fan base already generated by the popularity of the DEATH NOTE manga series, we are looking forward to the success of this innovative partnership.”

“With Shueisha's support and the agreement with NTV to bring DEATH NOTE to the American market, we will establish a new benchmark for bringing our audience the content they want when they want it,” says Daniel Marks, Senior Vice President, Strategy & Business Development, VIZ Media. “The success of the DEATH NOTE manga has created tremendous anticipation for its anime counterpart and we are committed to delivering the best content through a variety of platforms to our tech savvy fan base."

Are they basically saying that you have to pay to download the episodes?

& I'm wondering if they'll be subbed or dubbed. I really don't see VIZ being able to come up with a cast and start dubbing episodes fast enough for them to be released while it's still airing in Japan. So subbed, perhaps?

I know a lot of people that are going to be pissed at this. Especially at the fact that hard copies aren't being released.

:/ It sure seems like VIZ is moving in on fansubbers.

I guess they figured if you can't beat them, join them.

It's not surprising really. The anime DVD market has not been doing well thanks to digital fansubbing, torrents, and even sites like this. This will also cut costs for them quite a bit (production, distribution, etc.).

But anyone motivated enough to download it from Viz will just track down the fansubbed ones as well. Odds are it will still be fansubbed despite being licsenced, and regardless people will still be able to track down the existing fansubbed episodes anyways. And whats to stop people from figuring out a way to share the official version as well?

I think it's all going to depend on how much they charge for the episodes as well as what format they release them in. If they give it a DVD price, than to hell with them.

And whats up with the rental thing? If they make that dirt cheap with a longish (like 30 days or something) life, it may actually do well.

Personally, I think they should make hardcopies available for purchase even if only through their online store. I prefer watching my favorite anime on DVD, and I am a bit of a collector. Not sure if I'd buy Death Note (haven't seen or read a drop of it yet).

Anyone know how many episodes Death Note is supposed to be?

Don't fansubbers usually drop a series once it's been licensed? In that case everyone will either have to pay to download VIZ's version or just completely stop watching it.

I think it's 38 episodes.

Fansubbers don't always drop a series once it's been licensed. I remeber continuing to watch the new AMG after it was licensed. I remember it being licsenced. removed from animesuki, but i was still able to find the new episodes available on the fansub studio's site. That may have been unusual though.

This... this is very depressing. I'm going to put on my black clothes, sit in the dark, and mourn because this is horrible.

Unfortunately this sort of agreement was always going to happen eventually. People want full value for their product.

I wish company's wouldn't license things before they're even finished being aired and fansubbed. The only reason they know that they're popular is because so many people are downloading the fansub.
