Fat = unhealthy. If it was a anime about health and change from a slice of life perspective, I can see this working somehow. Otherwise, humans in general, are supposed to be decently weighted. 140-190 in males, 100-140 in females. In most cases.

lol you barely see fat girls in anime at all. Only in famous ones like naruto or one piece, but they are often filler chars. But in animes like school rumble or azumanga daoih (where the whole show is based on cuteness and pedophilia) there is absolutely ZERO

^_^ Otometeki Koi Kakumei: Love Revo DS!! is a game for ds and there is also a manga, you can find it by searching on google love revo manga. I thought the game was really nice even though i can't really understand whats happening by reading its text (it's available in korean and japanese) The character was really cute&refreshing i thought personally and so i was obsessivly looking for the anime/manga and luckily i recently found the manga. ^_^ (No anime though)
Anyway i think beauty is just in the eye of the beholder anyways. ^_^ Although having too much fat is unhealthy it doesn't mean that a person isn't the pretties just because they don't fit the narrow minded box.

I am slightly chubby, and although I exercise and eat well, it just won't go away. Oh well.
But I see what you guys mean, there are no tubby animé characters! I'm not talking morbidly obese, but there should be room in animé for a curvaceous woman. Japan doesn't really seem to realise there's another body shape besides top-heavy.... (Boobs and head, haha.)
Though that being said, a lot of (but not all) Japanese men and woman are quite skinny. The Japanese diet is 3 square (and fairly large but low in calorie) meals a day plus a light snack in the afternoon. Fast food chains are around but people who go to them eat rather conservatively, despite the fact you can order pizza with every topping under the sun (including eggs and mini hamburgers, seriously!).

Well, Totoro was fat, but he's also not human, and wasn't the main character.
these girls were and they're not fat.

I really hate to burst your bubble Tsu_Satsujin, but many women are just as prone to being mean to fat people as men are.
Also I would point out that some of the guys who run down fat women are probably themselves fat, though they would be loath
to admit it. Oh, and before you ask, yes I am fat. 
As to an anime with a fat lead character, the closest that I can come would be Ai in Popotan, though she isn't exactly really fat
she also isn't really thin either. |

i dunno...
even in mangas, they only show the "fat main girl"
for a little while.
cause then, 5 pages later, years have passed and she has become the "skinny, gorgeous, main girl."
But "Cousin" is good.
Its been couple chapters already and she hasnt TRANSFORMED yet.
its good, i like it.
