I've seen a few fat characters (e.g. Yabasawa (girl) from Sket Dance, Kawahama (boy) from Moyashimon), but they're definitely few in number, and I personally can't think of any fat female MAIN characters in any anime that I've heard of or seen. People gripe that this is unrealistic, but I frankly wonder if this "phenomenon" in part reflects the relatively low prevalence of obesity in real-life Japan. The obesity epidemic in America has been hitting the news in recent years, but I (even as a doctor) didn't really take it to heart until I went to Japan in 2007 (and again in 2010). Yes, there are obese people in Japan (and I'm not just talking about the sumo rikishi), but they're indeed rather rare overall. The contrast in my mind really hit home when I came back to the U.S. and was waiting in LAX for my connecting flight home. I hadn't noticed it much before, having grown up and living in the U.S. all these years and unconscinously accepting the prevalent obesity as being just part of the usual background scenery, but I saw maybe 30-40% of the people walking through LAX had notable bulges, ranging from somewhat overweight to morbidly obese. In Japan, maybe 1/10-th of that at most, and most people there are really fairly slender.
Second, I feel I have to chime in on the recent comment by UncleMion (who, upon re-reading, I'm not sure is just joking-- "fatties?" "ugliest, fattest monstrosity?"). It's so tiresome to hear the equation of politically correct sentiments and intelligence (implying deviation from such is necessarily ignorance). It's like my university days all over again. Ok, it's fair and accurate enough to say that being fat doesn't make a person evil, worthless, or something less than human. One can be fat and be smart, skillful, diligent, a good worker, a great friend, an interesting and/or attractive personality, and all-around great guy/gal. Yes, beauty is to some degree subjective, but there are also prevailing standards bigger than any individual can just dictate. The fact is that many people do not consider being fat as being attractive to look at. I didn't say everybody, but I think it's fairly safe to say many people, and even most people, if they're honest with themselves. This has nothing to do with intelligence or lack thereof. (This may have to do with lack of or resistance to reeducation by the political correction police, however.) While anime can be art, it is primarily entertainment and also a business, and people will watch more of what they enjoy watching. Beauty issues aside, being fat is also not healthy. One can feel good about one's self, or consider one's self as beautiful as one likes, but self-esteem won't do much against diabetes, fatty liver, cardiovascular disease, bad joints, etc...

I rarely ever see any fat characters at all.
There're 31 girls in professor Negi's class, and 30 of them are slender. The last one is kind of fat (but not really), and she's a damn cook, so that makes her forgiven.

Chieko from Princess Jellyfish? She's not the main character, but a pretty prominent supporting character who is not just there for comic relief.

First ask yourself, do you enjoy drawing fat people. If you do, would you always want to draw them as the main character in your story.
If you think there should be more fat main characters, what's stopping you from doing it?

Why no fat people? .........No, seriously, why not? For a medium that's pretty quick to make a gag about stuffed belly girls in anime, they never have an actual fat character, or girl for that matter, in their shows.....Why not!? It could happen; maybe a young girl or teenager who's got the whole plump ball thing going on......kinda like that episode from Fairly OddParents.....only a character...I dunno, could be funny or, if handled right, even a little cute...
Anime should have more of THIS......
Not so much this....
Please, Japan. Please.......

Japanese fiction esthetics = Ladyboys and 36,26,36 females.
Muscular men tend to get shafted just as badly as our more rotund brothers. Being an overweight female is obviously a much more stigmatized existence.

Wow come to think off it there isnt lol! But there might be spin off episodes in an Anime where a girl might drink a potion or something and become fat for a day or something haha. But generally Japanese people tend to be skinny so.. maybe thats why?
