Why And How Did You Join Johnny’s?
I always wanted to dance. In fact, that's one fact that the rest of my family didn't know. Having a mom for a university professor and a father whose political influences can get to us children, it's difficult to admit to them that anything from the "arts" category (other than literature) would end up as one of my hobbies.
Anyway, I've participated in some of my school's activities from sports, cultural clubs, and eventually stage performing and it was a fresh, short start for me. I saw some variety shows on TV and seeing those Johnny's groups and the Juniors dancing routines behind really impressed me. I even wished that I could be one of those dancing Juniors, dancing behind a popular group. I saw V6 performing one time and I started to look up to Ken Miyake and I even had hopes that I'd get to meet him someday.
There were also a few times where some of the elders in the neighborhood and my classmates’ mothers (during Open House Days in school) think or even assumed that I'm one of those Juniors and every time I told them "No, I'm not,” it disappointed them somehow.
So after giving some thought, I decided to give joining Johnny's a try. I picked up an application from the Johnny's office, filled it out and included my picture (not a very good one- it was really dorky *laughs*). About a month or two later, I got a phone call regarding an audition appointment.
I told my sister and brother about it and they were both happy. But when I told my parents (and finally had the guts to do it), they weren't too happy so it was pretty tough for me to convince my two strict parents that not even idol/showbiz training can slow down my academics. I wanted to prove them that, so they gave me one chance with it. A few weeks after auditions, I received a mail from Johnny's and out came a green card.
Unlike some of the lucky Juniors who joined at the same time as I did, I became one of those "soloist" (meaning he's not placed in a Juniors subgroup). To be honest, I never really liked being alone and I waited for a long time for management to put me in a subgroup until I got a notice that I would be taking photo shoots with Musical Academy, which was the most popular Junior subgroup at that time.
I met Yuki Kohara, who was the most popular member there, and became the best of friends. I also made friends with the other MA members, Pana (Tsuyoshi Yonehana), Shingo Machida and Tomohiro Yara. I barely noticed one more member there because he was so quiet and he hardly spoke so I never really had a chance to actually get close to him like how I got close to Kohara and the rest of the MA subgroup.
But I was very impressed with his singing and dancing that I got a little envious and thought "It'd be cool if I get to train in singing and dancing with that guy." I never thought that this particular "silent" member would end up being the leader of Arashi and would be in the same debut group as I was.
Eventually later in Shounen Club and other Junior-hosted variety shows, I met another subgroup, MAIN, in which 3 of them, Nino, Jun, and Aiba, would later be in the same debut group as me and Ohno. We also became back dancers for KinKi Kids and V6 (and eventually met Miyake-senpai - he's really cool!) and I really enjoyed just dancing behind them, not giving a thought that one day, I will be performing in front instead of the back.
When we first heard of a new debut group coming up, I felt uncomfortable. It was at that period where I had to take college entrance exams and took a month-long break just to study. Few days after the news came out, I even checked out the bulletin board and there was a list of "potential Juniors to debut as professional idols" and I ended up on the top 10.
Nino was there too and he was telling me that he didn't want to debut because he still had high hopes of becoming a professional baseball player. So he and I went to Johnny-san's office to talk to him, hoping to ask him to take both of us off the list. But when we went there, he wasn't available.
But I did see some scribbled notes on his notebook on the desk with a bunch of names such as "A-B-C, QUESTION, TRAILBLAZERS, etc." and the next page, it said "How about just a simple Japanese word for a name?" Then below, it had a bunch of Kanji written until right at the bottom of the page, there was a single Kanji character "Storm" (Arashi).
A few weeks later, I got a call from Johnny-san and he simply asked "Do you have a passport? Would you like to go to Hawaii?" I got excited, thinking that it'd be another photo shoot with MA and some other Juniors for the magazines so I said "YEAH! I WANT TO GO TO HAWAII!"
When the day came, as we arrived at Honolulu Harbor on a cruise, the announcement was made. It wasn't a magazine photo shoot but it was the presentation of Johnny's newest creation “Arashi”. I felt kind of naïve at that time because out of MA, only Ohno was there, plus 3 out of 4 members of MAIN. And it's just then that we all learned that we are THE NEW DEBUT GROUP – which also means that the 5 of us will be stuck together as a group for the rest of our lives (not that it's a bad thing, of course!).
When I called my parents about the Hawaii trip and Arashi, once again, they weren't too happy. They got worried about my entrance exams and all that but I simply told them that I brought my school books and notes with me (to Hawaii) so I can study during breaks. I did well at those entrance exams by the way! (Dun’s note: Wasn’t he busy watching porn in the hotel room during that Hawaii trip by the way?)
I was sad that Yuki or other popular idols like Takizawa-kun and Imai-kun didn't make it but at least it was with the Juniors I'm close with (well not quite with Ohno then). We felt awkward with each other first, especially with the 5th member being so unfamiliar to us, but I had high respects for Ohno-kun.
For the longest time we tried to make Ohno open himself up to us and at least try to accept us as his group mates in Arashi. We're not a brand new subgroup, we were the real thing now, so Ohno can't really back out. We're different now than we used to be. The Arashi today is the Arashi that the 5 of us together had created and we're going to stay that way.
