I learned to play Go while I lived in Korea. Of course, I wasn't allowed to call it Go... I had to call it by the Korean name, Baduk (or Paduk) or my teacher, the venerable Mr. Yi (I called him Ee Saboo-nim) would hit me with a rolled up magazine or newspaper form a cross the table. ("They call it Go in Japan, but you live in Korea... Here we call it Baduk!" he would say as he took a swipe at me... And this was all in Korean, of course...)

I would definitely say it was a heck of a way to waste away the lazy afternoons. By the time I finished my two year assignment in Korea, Go had become my favorite past time, right after getting lost in Korea and having to use my Korean skills to the utmost to find food, shelter, and (ultimately) my way back home before the weekend was over.

Mr. Yi was an amazing player. He might have been 2 geup (2nd Rank Amateur), but I have a suspicion he could have been 1 geup (1st Rank Amateur, the highest rank you can hold without being a pro...) I started off as shin geup (New player, no rank) and after a month I was 18 geup (weakest Korean Amateur rank). It took me several moths to make it to 17 geup, but I was so proud. If I ever make it back to Korea (hopefully I'll be teaching English over there in a few years) I can hone my skills again and get officially ranked by the Korean Go Institute. That would be so cool.

I've been playing go (chinese: weiqi, korean: baduk) for a few years, but I tend to play it for a month then stop, so in the past 3 years I've only played maybe 2 months. I'm unsure of my actual rank, but I think it might be around 20kyu or something.

Anyone who plays go (even a little) should join the Crunchyroll Go Club!

I usually play on KGS (Kiseido Go Server http://www.gokgs.com) which I think is the best place to play go online. You are more likely to find serious players there than something like yahoo, and the java client is pretty user-friendly.
