Arhtur Miller was born into a wealthy Jewish family on October 17, 1915 in New York, New York. Miller applied to the University of Michigan where he pursued journalism, but later switched to English in which he earned a bachelor’s degree. During his time at the University of Michigan, he began writing plays and was praised for his first piece, No Villain which received the Avery Hopwood Award. He continued to write successful plays which included All My Sons, A Memory of Two Mondays, After the Fall, Incident of Vickey, The Price, A View from the Bridge, The Ride Dawn Mt. Morgan, On Politics and the Art of Acting, The Last Yankee, The Creation of the World and Other Business, A Memory of Two Mondays, Mr. Peter’s Connection, The American Clock, Broken Glass, Death of a Salesman, and his most recent work Finishing the Picture. Miller also wrote and published novels such as, The Misfits, Focus, In Russia, Chinese Encounters, In the Country, and an autobiography called Timebends: A Life. All his works have been met with much praise, winning prestigious awards such as the Pulitzer Prize, the Tony Award, the Oliver Award, and the Theatre Guild Natonal Award. Arthur Miller passed away on February 10, 2005.
