I do not think I can adequately describe how to do it, so this is taken directly from Delphi of Emblem Lords:

QUOTE (Delphi @ May 3 @ 2006, 5:53 p.m.)
I decided to do this when I got some questions on how to be a better RPer. Since I didn't really have anyone to help me much (one person who was learning as she went. She’s still my RP idol though. ) so I like to help as many as I can. I’m certainly not the best RPer but I’ve done a lot of it since I was 14 (that’s about 5 years now). So I’ve been around. I hope this helps anyone out there who needs help getting started.

The first thing is details. The more you can show with your words, the better grasp the other RPers can get on your character and what's going on around them. It takes time but a dictionary and thesaurus are good. But make sure you know what the words mean. And don't throw big words in just to do so. It gets confusing. Basically, it's just writing aesthetics. You learn more about that as you continue school. Also, spell and grammar checkers are a Godsend. If you have a long post and want to make sure everything is spelled right, run it through a spell checker just to make sure you got everything.

People play differently. Some people don't mind if you control their characters completely, some don't mind if people do a little, and some (like me) get really anal about it. If you're not sure what kind of RPer they are, PM them if you can do something with their character in a post. If you don't get a reply in a timely matter, save it for later. It's always best to ask first because you gain more respect that way. People will respect that you ask them first instead of assuming.

Next is a little vocab:

OOC: Out of character. Basically anything you're saying as yourself and not your character.

IC: In character. This is the RP part.

IRL: In real life.

OOC Info: Information that you know that your character doesn't. A lot of people (like me) get really put out when someone starts throwing out OOC info IC. So basic rule of thumb is to look back and see if it was ever stated out loud or if your character was ever in a position to know this information.

Auto: I'll use an example. Since this was originally a PM to R34P3R, I will be borrowing his character. This has no bearing on his character what so ever, btw:

Auto: Nyx sneaks up behind Drake then slits his throat.

Wrong. Why? I didn't give you a chance to defend yourself. Here's how you could still use that but keep it from being an auto.

Nyx makes an attempt to grab Drake from behind, brining a knife from her sash to place as his throat. "Hello again, Drake."

The part in bold is what's different. The action is happening so you have a chance to defend. If you don't mind, I'll use Drake again for this demo.

"Drake hears the knife being unsheathed then turns, his axe at the read to parry Nyx's attack. "It has, hasn't it General." He sneered.

The thing to remember is that not all moves are dodgable. A lot of good RPers will allow their characters to be hit every once in a while to show they are not all mighty.

Which leads into the next part. God modding.

God modding can be two things: One is being like a game master god and moving peoples characters without permission. We've covered what to do about that. The second and more common definition is one describing a God-like character. This character basically can't die, cannot have wounds inflicted upon him, is supremely handsome, all the girls want him, men want to be him, and he kills lords by the dozens in one swing of his sword.

Little over powered, huh? Which is why we give characters weaknesses. For example Nyx is beautiful and a tactical genius. But she has her flaws. She is small and if matched blow for blow against someone larger than her, she will most likely take a beating. She also has a staring problem, which unnerves people, and she often doesn't mean it. She has other weaknesses but I'm still fleshing her out as a completely character and these weaknesses will become more apparent as a play her.

Some thing a lot of people forget is a characters motivation. Yes, it sounds very cliché, but I mean it. Why does your character do certain things? As I said in a post earlier Nyx wouldn’t raze a village. Why? Because she doesn’t do things that way. In her mind, it’s a waste. Let’s take a peek into what she’d be thinking:

Why raze a village when you can sway them to your side with offers of help and protection from the kingdom? Or stop an uprising by killing the leader in a way that doesn’t reek of murder. But that’s risky because martyrs cannot be silenced.

That’s her thoughts on the thing. It’s easy to have your character act as you do but if you can separate yourself from them enough to allow them to “think” of what they would do, it allows a more interesting character and allows you to be somewhat morally ambiguous. Which is needed if you aren’t playing a good guy. Because let’s face it: No one really wants to hurt people IRL.

So now let’s think of what an evil character’s motivation could be. There’s the usual “rawr I’m evil so I destroy things.” Kind of flat, huh? I’m going to use a friend’s character that I helped develop to get inside his mind. He’s an Imperial officer in a Star Wars RP. Now why does he do all the dastardly things he does? Kill even his own grandson (Let’s call him Zack) and his grandson’s wife (his species lives a long time)? He felt he was protecting Zack from an evil woman. Talking of rebellions and such chaos. The galaxy would fall apart. And she was all for this cause. She made Zack weak. So he would eliminate her. Unfortunately Zack was so under her spell that there was no hope for him. So this character decided that he would release Zack from his madness and killed him. Evil, but his motivation isn’t just Mr. Generic Evil Man. He’s much deeper and you can almost see why he did what he did.

That’s all I’ll post for now. If questions arise, feel free to ask. And all you other veteran RPs out there can add your two cents too! I’m not the only one here with experience.

Ja ne!

takes me about 9 minutes to read but i'm a fast reader so for average people i would say it should not take more than 20 minutes to read for anyone else, and yes it has info you should read.

Ok I got it, but I have one question concerning god-moding

If say someone pritty much has their character stab and swing (in other words only use basic attacks) would it be god-moding if my character always dodged and blocked so long as they resonably could?
