A sword is a long-edged piece of metal, used as a cutting and/or thrusting weapon in many civilizations throughout the world. The word sword comes from the Old English sweord, which cognates to Old High German swert, Middle Dutch swaert, Old Norse sverð (cp. modern Scandinavian sværd/sverd/svärd: Danish sværd, Norwegian sverd, Swedish svärd) Old Frisian and Old Saxon swerd and Modern Dutch zwaard, from a Proto-Indo-European root *swer- "to wound, to hurt".

A sword fundamentally consists of a blade, a hilt, and a pommel, typically with one or two edges for striking and cutting, and a point for thrusting. The basic intent and physics of swordsmanship has remained fairly constant down the centuries, but the actual techniques varied among cultures and periods as a result of the differences in blade design and purpose. The names given to many swords in mythology, literature, and history reflect the high prestige of the weapon

A Japanese sword, or a nihontō (日本刀 or にほんとう, lit. Japanese sword?), is a traditional sword or bladed weapon of Japan. They are categorized into several types according to their size and manufacture. The most commonly known type is the katana, along with the similar made tachi, is a single-edged, usually curved, long sword traditionally used by the samurai since the 1400s; Wakizashi as the shorter sword; Tsurugi are double-edged long swords; Ōtachi or Nodachi are older but longer single-edged versions, and Naginata and Yari, due to their forging methods are still considered a part of the Nihonto family, even though they are pole weapons.

Japanese swords are fairly common today, antique and even modern forged swords can still be found and purchased. Modern nihontō or Japanese-made swords are only made by a few hundred smiths in Japan today at contests hosted by the All Japan Swordsmiths Association.

Katana (刀 or かたな, Katana?) is a type of Japanese sword (nihontō), and is one of the most common sub-category and a lot of foreigners confused them as the same thing. Originally used as a general term for single-edged sword, as opposed to tsurugi (剣 or つるぎ, tsurugi?), which are double-edged swords, the term is now used specifically to describe nihontō that are around 70–90 cm long with a curved blade. This is different from Chokutō (直刀 or ちょくとう, Chokutō?), which is a straight blade. What most do not know is that the katana was no doubt very popular during the age of the samurai but used mostly for civilian purposes instead of open warfare much like the rapier. More common Japanese war swords consisted of the Wakizashi, the Daitō[citation needed], or the Tachi.

A genuine, fully functional Reverse Blade Katana! The Japanese style reverse blade katana features a traditional hand braided cord wrap, with inset four dragon menuki, shimmering silver fabric diamonds a steel tsuba and pommel. The sharp function high carbon steel reverse blade is mounted with a traditional copper habaki. The scabbard on this reverse blade katana is hand made from wood, and covered in leather.

For those unfamiliar with the reverse blade katana, the sharp side is opposite where you would normally expect it, while the normal cutting side, is the wide unsharpened portion of the blade. The idea behind this is when striking your opponent as you would with a normal sword, when using the reverse blade sword the opponent would be stunned, not cut. As this Reverse Blade Katana is a real sword, great care should be taken as hitting someone could cause serious injury, even death!

This high carbon steel reverse blade is hand pounded and forged over hot coals, using many of the original techniques passed down through the generations of ancient sword smiths. The tsuba and end cap are individually hand cast in steel with a traditional solid copper habaki hand fitted to each 27" blade. The workmanship put into each sword attests to each sword being an authentically fully functional original work of art! The overall length of this sword is 40".
