This is a " WTF" Moment. Seriously. Going through all that rubbish for the sake of art. Im a designer and I know people who go all out for their project but this one is just too much.

Yea, I personally think this is just a dumb gimmick from someone who probably has no real creative talent, just like putting Jesus in a jar of urine or whatever. It takes no real talent or creativity and the only real goal is to try to gain fame and make money as easily as possible.

What does being happy about that belief say about you? Disturbing.

Anyway, while I don't find this disgusting in an ethical sense, it nevertheless disgusts me to think about viewing the exhibit. I know all about the "what is art?" debate, but this really seems... out there. Shock of this sort is a cheap way to get attention and is not very effective in inspiring intelligent thought and discussion.

What interests me is that she's being allowed to display it...

UPDATE

Turns out this is a "hoax" that she's attempting to pass off as "performance art."

http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5hvahaxQa3oRSJqBeqVTY3oJlGJMQD903VVSO0

I don't really care that it's a hoax. Just the idea of doing this is almost as bad as actually doing it. From the article:

Groups both for and against abortion rights expressed outrage over the affair.

Ted Miller, a spokesman for NARAL Pro-Choice America, called the concept offensive and "not a constructive addition to the debate over reproductive rights."

Peter Wolfgang, executive director of the Family Institute of Connecticut, an anti-abortion group, said his anger was not mitigated by the fact that Shvarts was never pregnant.

"I'm astounded by this woman's callousness," he said. "There are thousands of women in this country who are dealing with the pain of having had an abortion, with the trauma of having suffered a miscarriage. For her to make light of that for her own purposes is just beyond words."

I also wonder if this means that people can perform other hoaxes, like calling in bomb threats, and call that performance art too?

So you think it's alright for her to do this? If she's allowed to do this, than i'm allowed to go and kill somebody and hang there dead body up in a art exbit. It's really the same thing as she is doing.

False. That person is not using your body in order to live.

I read this article yesterday! It horrifies me and shocks me! It feels as if she has trivialised abortion when millions of people have to deal with abortion and have to make the hard choices.

UPDATE2

Ok, so now the student is claiming this isn't a hoax.

http://yaledailynews.com/articles/view/24528

But Shvarts reiterated Thursday that she repeatedly use a needleless syringe to insert semen into herself. At the end of her menstrual cycle, she took abortifacient herbs to induce bleeding, she said. She said she does not know whether or not she was ever pregnant.

.No one can say with 100-percent certainty that anything in the piece did or did not happen,. Shvarts said, .because the nature of the piece is that it did not consist of certainties..

This afternoon, Shvarts showed the News footage from tapes she plans to play at the exhibit. The tapes depict Shvarts . sometimes naked, sometimes clothed . alone in a shower stall bleeding into a cup.

Stupid attention ho.

Sounds like your typical American “Liberal” or Democrat to me…. Murdering babies to get attention, or better, to work out control issues. Makes women these days feel empowered to murder unborn children-hints, nearly half of all abortions attained are done so by women who’ve had multiple abortions in the past.

That is a terribly offensive statement. Thats kind of like me saying "these typical Christian retards keep spending all their time praying to a sky fairy to come butt fuck them , so that they can go be his sex slaves in the after life." Your misrepresentation of why most women get abortions is no less ridiculous or offensive. BTW Generalizations like that one are stupid. Have a nice day.

Actually, I think she got what she wanted. Maybe more than she could chew off but she definitely was anticipating this sort of reaction. And this sort of does make people talk about it more than the thousands of essays than whatever anti-abortion group can come up with.

In fact, I would say she hovers on brilliance from the reaction in this thread, although I think her conception of how her art piece would go is a little bit off. The thing is there seems to be 2 messages you can read from this thing she is doing. The first is the fact of the "choice" she is having. She does it once a month. That is much less than the number of women actually going for abortion. This seems to be a "pro-choice" stance, as if she was saying "who the heck cares for fetuses". However, there is that thing about how seeing that blood and thinking about what she does is absolutely disgusting. And the reaction by shibole. If this is disgusting how about the actual abortions? That is a clear message you can read as well.

And yes, her art is brilliant precisely because she can attract this kind of attention. If nobody looked at it twice or thought about it twice then its not a good piece of art.

Edit: But yes I agree that in a way it does seem a bit repulsive for anyone to do this, even for the sake of "art" or whatever.

Well, it wasn’t meant to be -not- offensive. Whatever the case, it wasn’t ridiculous either. I didn’t say, “all women,” because there is that .02% (Actual statistic, from the center of bioethical reforms,) that got raped or victimized in some way-but, for the most part women are having abortion for social reasons.

Whatever the case-if it makes you feel better, I’m also convinced that most Christians are only Christians because it’s convenient.

I wasn’t generalizing. Like I said-typical, fitting into that stereotype. Many women have abortions for legit reasons-though, I find it completely absurd and flatly idiotic when people pretend like women are having abortions “for the sake of the child.” You know, serial killers often convince themselves that what they’re doing is for the good of their victims?

Anyway, I don’t believe a fetus is a human being-I call abortion murder because I’d be a hypocrite if I didn’t. None the less-the fact remains, that many women support abortion simply because they’re rebellious against men-who, have in the past, and continue in the present, to try and control them.

Just look at the femnazi-who decide to be pro-choice just because it’s the archetypical feministic stance. (Mind you, I support feminism-just not the femnazi. Feminists and a femnazi are two different things.)

Well-I can’t be upset by your attack-you’re completely justified. After all, I started this entire topic. Even still, you could offer the perfect argument (I have) and typical American women will still convince themselves that abortion is the way of God-except, they call God Obama-who is the world's greatest cult leader...next to Oprah.

They actually wrote a book about Obama, Oprah, and the occult… then again…I think they also wrote a book that claims the evolution took place in seven days… Hmm, well, whatever the case-I’m ranting. I gave an offensive analysis of an offensive action.

The point was to show that-women acting like this one-actually exacerbate the situation, and work against their cause by creating narrow-mindedness against their genocide. (Again, I only call it genocide because I'd be a hypocrit to call it anything else.)

By the way...wuz in your avi? Looks pretty cool.

Yes I admit that. Your statement is ridiculous in claiming those reasons are "to get attention, or better, to work out control issues, and then you go to claim tht there is some empowerment issue here, which is utter nonsense. Most women get abortions for reasons far different than the ones you mention.

Yes that was generalizing, as you made a statement about a group which was unfounded in reality.

I think thats a valid reason in some ways. If you are religious you can think of it as making sure those babies are in heaven, as they never got the chance to be exposed to the risk of hell. So I always like to tell pro lifers if they think all aborted fetuses go to heaven they are doing something morally repugnant, as stopping the abortion gives the fetus a chance to go to hell. Not to mention the fucked up nature of the world. I think anyone is better off not to have to deal with it.

What is you rational basis for this belief?

That made me laugh. I always picture Oprah in a book store with a magic wand picking which book America will read next.

You are right her actions are offensive, so I guess your post was on one level justified totally. I can’t believe this chick got into Yale. I mean WTF.

My avatar is Rorschach from comic Watchmen. He is a crime fighter with no super powers, and who mostly just likes to hurt people, The comic was written by Alan Moore- he of V for Vendetta fame. Its got a lot of stuff about the cold war, and the justification of evil actions for noble purposes. Alan Moore writes very cerebral work. In fact he refused to allow his name to appear on the V movie because of how much of his content they changed. Watchmen is also the only comic ever to win the Hugo award, which is the most prestigious science fiction and fantasy award in the world. The movie comes out sometime this year. I think it's going suck a big one, but I pray I am proven wrong.
